Air conditioning controls

Does anyone know how hard it would be to remove and replace the A/C components in the dash?

A while back my temp control knob decided to go on the fritz. I can have it on full cold and it'll blow out hot air and the same for the hot side. Sometimes it wont change at all. Mazda said I needed to replace all the components behind the dash. They also said it was a common problem for the 04s, but I haven't read anything on here about it. (I know the dealerships will say stuff, but I figured I'd ask here because I'd like to think I can trust you all when it comes to the car.)

I've had my 04 since 2004 and am the original owner. I usually don't use the AC unless I'm out with my girlfriend. So, any help you can provide would be great.

Thanks!

i've heard that -- that's it's an internal issue (ie not the knob itself). i have the same exact problem, and i have an 04. i'm just been too lazy and poor to try to get it fixed. i think there is a thread somewhere about it being a common problem...

Okay, they told me it'd be like $500 to fix it. Like I said earlier, I don't use my AC enough to justify the money. I had thought about getting the parts out of a wrecked 8 and do it myself. Just wanted to know how hard it would be to swap everything behind the controls out. (control module?)

yeah that happens in my car, But i wont pay 500 bucks to fix it. just keep turning the knob back and forth to either hot or cold. It works for me like that. after a few turns.

Same deal with mine ('04 also). I was thinking if it was the knob of rigging up just a on/off switch but if it is something else behind it then that will be a issue. $500 is a bit much. I say give a chime ova to Patrick (forget username atm Gr3dy sumthing haha.. sorry Pat your name is to hard to remember what with those numbers and all). I'm sure he could beat that price by leaps and bounds (if he has it that is).

I was starting to have that problem.. except mine when it does happen (which is not often) I don't have either the A/C or Heater on... It's just warm out that's mostly felt on the passenger side. Spoke to the dealer about it.. They told me it was a common thing, fix is $600.. recommended I whack the knobs a few times...

Pulling the faceplate and attached controlls is really rather easy, see radio DIY's. If that's where the stuff needs to be replaced, the job should be cake. If there's other stuff, I don't know, but I'm in the same boat.

AC Control Woes...

I have the exact same problem, and my dealership said it was the "AC Control Module". They quoted me around 900 bucks to fix, with the part costing upwards of 800. I researched and found the AC Control Module on the internet (I think through a supplier here or something) for around 450 or so IIRC (This happened awhile back) but have not yet had the intestinal fortitude to attempt to replace. Does anyone have a resolution to this issue, it's driving me and my wife NUTS. If it is the AC Control Module, does anyone have experience replacing it?

Finally, what manual would you recommend for attempting such a replacement? I own a VW Jetta Diesel and there is a great manual called the Bentley Manual that is considered the best resource for this stuff, is there an equivalent for the RX-8? Thanks for all the help.
