Bought some 7500K D2Sb bulbs from member "RotaryRasp", and thought I'd post some comparison pics.....
(The 7500ks sure make the little running lights look yellow - ) First pic is from a high angle, as you would see from the sidewalk, you can see the bluer tint in the housing. Second is as you would see on the road, oncoming - bluish, actually has less "dazzle". Third is still low-beam but from road level, and demonstrates the reduced output, even at only 7500*K, of the bluer light. I would put it at about 70% of the stock illumination. S |
I see what you mean, but how is it possible?
Arn't the stock lights only 4000k? Shouldn't the new blue ones be brighter? |
Higher K = less bright

The K is Kelvins for color temperature. It is not necessarily related to Lumens.

not necesssarily, but for the most part the higher the K the less lumens you get.

less light but a very tight color, make the bmw and maxima drivers cringe :P lol

Maby its just the way they show up in the photo, but my stock HIDs look a lot blue than that, those look like halogens |

Yes, these are 35 watt D2S HID low-beam "capsules", same as stock, but higher K, bluer, and with less actual lumens.
They sell halogen bulbs by their Kelvin rating too, but these aint no $20 set of blue glass crap! I am sticking with them, (I put the other side in, obviously!) I like the color, and they actually seem brighter because the beam is blue, it doesn't get lost in the ambient - you can pick the pattern out on the road. Should look awesome on snow! S |
how much of a hassle was it to switch out the HID bulbs?

Hassles....
No hassle at all - jacked up the side, took off the front wheel, removed 6-8 of the twist lock plastic nut thingies to get to the back of the projector, then twist off the cover, twist off wiring, unclip capsule - done!
Took ten minutes for the second side, using a flashlight! Didn't even take the wheel off, (but should have, it would have been easier!). S :) |
mine dont look so yellow... and from inside... the beam is really whitish/blue tint color

I'm glad you like them! One thing I really liked about those bulbs is when you're driving at night, look at how they lght up reflective signs....you'll notice the signs kinda glow. Very cool.

i'm gonna have to check my lights tonight....
but my xenons look really white/blue tint... i don't know how it coul dlook that yellow in the picture... am i missing something? is that hid for the non xenon kit? |

I'm thinking the 7500k mark will be the cutoff for me - anything higher would be "too much"! I DID notice the reflective sign thing, last night - I was approaching a railroad crossing, and even though the beams were nicely down on the tracks, the actual signs seemed to light up in blue! I went that route, and regretted it - in the case of the halogen H9 hi-beams, the only way to "match" would be to select bulbs with dark blue quartz bulbs, or even worse, a dark blue coating. The blue "glass" REALLY restricts the amount of available light - I swear, when I hit the hi-beams, it actually got DARKER! :lol:
There is really no need to match them both, where will you be cruising, with your hi beams on ? Since they are so bright, you can't look directly at them anyway. For more light, the best (and probably only) way would be a higher wattage, the stocks are 65 watt, but this brings up fuse, wiring and warranty issues. I have plans (always!) for HID hi beams, but the kit I have is for 9006 bulbs, so some adaptation is required. In Canada we have daytime running lights, which would need to be removed/bypassed, the HIDs would not like the "half-voltage" supplied by the DRL system!! S |
well there are lots of places where you would want to run high beams... we don't have much street lights in some areas.... and its like all woody and forresty and stuff.. haha
the problem i see with xenons.. is that the low beam is so bright... that anything beyond the edge of the xenon is just black.... i've been trying to figure out 1) do my auto levels work?? 2) should i readjust beam height.... 1) i do'nt know how to check 2) i know the main part of the beam is well below the trunk line of most passenger cars... and not even close to getting into suv's... but i also know that people think i'm high beaming them at times... haha... i love xenon.. so... i'm still trying to decide whether to move up a little or not therefore in the mean time... i would like to have high beams that just match color.. os its not so yellow haha... cuz u can tell from the inside when you flip em on.. |

I read that Audi and BMW use the same type of bulbs, same color temp and everything as our 8's, but the housing is different, and thus produces that beautiful blue color with no sacrifice of light output. Anybody have any idea how we could do this to our cars?
