hey guys its me again... im not exactly a newbie to working in cars but ive never cracked open the 8's transmission. while ive got the trans out waiting for the bhr flywheel, I thought I might address the 3-4th gear syncro. would this be a job better left to a dedicated transmission shop? have any of the EXPERIENCED owners tackled this? the last one I had apart was an automatic and that was over 20 years ago.

Biggest issue is there are a few special tools that makes it a lot easier

Another issue is the price of parts. The syncro's and gears for these things are crazy expensive

If you have done transmissions before they aren't really any different....

Let us know if you pop it open ;)

Dealership wants $300 for the synchro and they have to order it, same with the oil seal.

Usually 2nd and 3rd are suspect....so you will be in it for $6-700 in parts

Often you can pick up a low mile unit from a newer car for that price

rebuilding the transmission isn't the easiest job, there are a LOT of little parts in there that all need to get back exactly where they came from.

there also will be more worn parts than you're expecting (the 3-4 sliding sleeve is probably bad, couple of staked down nuts, bearings)

also assembling it is hard, you end up having to hold all three shafts in alignment, without using any of the sliding sleeves, to put it into the case. the factory must have had a jig, or maybe they had it upside down, and aligned the shafts and then just dropped the bellhousing on.

anyways its a big job, but if we could do it at the dealership, there's no reason you couldn't either. not like we had the special tools, or even the manual or anything
