416 Miles / 670km with ONE tank !!!!!!
So today i just reached 670km with one tank wich is about 416miles !!! how ? here is the trick... (works better on road trips)
Use draft created by big trucks... stay behind them all the way and enjoy the view thats the best way to get high mpg in an rx8... the closer u get the more mpg u get. too close can be dangerous. staying 100ft behind a truck can save up to 30% GAS...50ft 43% u do the math ! So yeah i guess that's the highest miles per tank done ? yet... my personal best with normal driving is 450km (280miles) |
I guess you answered your "poor mileage" question from a few other threads then. :)
And yes, drafting is part of hypermilling, which can be used by any car out there, not just the RX-8. If you are interested in seeing all the other methods of hypermilling, here is a decent site. http://ecomodder.com/forum/EM-hyperm...ecodriving.php If you ran the tank empty (15.9 US gallons) doing that, it's 26mpg to the US people, which is certainly in the realm of possibility when hypermilling. I'm guessing you were at least below the 13.1 gal low fuel light. So, no, not a record. A few people have been up there. I've been up to 27mpg myself. It's insanely boring though. And too much driving like that will just build up excessive carbon in the RX-8's engine. Plus, note this section of the wiki: Safety and awareness program Hypermiling has come under fire from several quarters due to claims of dangerous or unlawful behavior by some hypermilers,[5] such as tailgating larger vehicles on freeways to save fuel. As a result, the Hypermiling Safety Foundation was formed in August 2008 to promote a safety and public awareness program, advocating legal fuel-saving techniques. |

I doubt it. |
No, no. "This", the concept of drafting definitively increasing mileage. Of course, the closer you get the less reaction time you have available, so it can be inherently dangerous... Setting the cruise control is much safer :)

I think the published record (which very few people believe, though I do), is olddragger's supercharged and re-geared RX-8. There is another guy on here experimenting the more exotic ECU re-tuning to see what impact on mileage he can get just from that, and has been able to show significant improvement for short periods of time before the ECU figures out that it's operating outside of it's intended parameters and over-rides his adjustments. |

Ah, here: Mythbusters: drafting 10 feet behind a big rig will improve mileage 39 percent Yeah, it's no surprise to anyone with an ODB2 reader that looks at live data. Set cruise control on flat ground faintly faster than a truck ahead of you in the same lane and watch the calculated load, instant mileage, fuel injector duty cycle, or MAF data, and you will see that they change more and more the closer you get. Lower wind resistance means less energy needed to overcome it. And yes, there are limits to what is reasonable, and it can easily cross into stupidity and dangerous driving. |

I drafted behind trucks in my Jeep Cherokee at 65 mph and was able to increase my mileage from 15 to 19 mpg.

Lovely signature chris.

I try not to follow trucks, that is how I got the small crack in my window and chips in my paint. All it takes is for them to hit a little patch of rocks or go off the road slightly and you get sand blasted.

Good thing to do if you really hate your 8 ...

You don't start a new thread. Just read the threads already here. And you already posted.
You should use the search function to find your answer. There is 10 yrs of information accumulated on this site and chances are it's been covered. Failure to do so, while it isn't sanctioned, will result in nasty comments. |
oh okay thanks.
i was just wanting to make ask some questions on the habits i should devolop for having my 08 rx8 as a daily driver if you guys could help me out |

Sweet!
So with all the money you save will you be repainting the front end and hood from all the rocks that get kicked up by those big truck tires? Breaking even FTW!! :biggthump |
