2004 Runs Better

Two weeks into ownership of a 2004 with 5,000 miles on a new engine. New plugs, and I just installed new OEM coils and spark plug wires and replaced a filthy air filter, change the oil and filter too. I swear that when I touched the old front leading plug wire connector it just fell off the plug, so I am thinking that it was not connected, just sort of sitting on the plug. Also discovered and repaired two vacuum leaks on the small black plastic fittings for the vacuum hoses that connect to the intake bellows. I was a bit worried about the car at first, but I must say that now it runs GREAT, thanks to all the excellent information in this forum that let me know what is important to do first. I doubt the new engine will fail prior to the warranty running out, so I really want to take good care of it.

TYork, congrats on the new engine and it sounds like you're off to a great start with doing your research on here and addressing the coils / plugs on your vehicle.
I have heard quite a few people discovering the spark plug wire being loose which is why those should be checked from time to time.

our OEM ignition coils do wear our rather quickly (sort of how I used to go through distributor caps like crazy on old cars) so make sure you're changing those every 30,000 miles or so or at least testing them to make sure they are still functioning properly.

I'd recommend looking into using a little pre-mix with every fill up as it'll help keep those apex seals lubricated and hopefully extend engine life even more.
I use Idemitsu with every fill up, usually 3 to 4 ounces per tank.

How do you check your coils for problems? my car is currently having a starting/ running like poop problem since yesterday. Got to figure it out today. thanks in advance.
