What's the benefit of having two piece apex seals versus one piece?

So, if two piece seal better, does that mean that 3mm seal better than 2mm? Not that I can find 3mm seals for the Renesis. However, I could get my hands on Ianetti 2pc 2mm seals if I felt like forking over the dough for them.

Oh yeah I forgot about that. I guess I'll have to start writing that new epic.

A 3mm seals worse than a 2mm. They are just stronger.

Ah so. That, then, would be why Mazda Motorsports says that Ianetti 2 pc seals for the 13B-REW can take 19lbs of boost and 3pc seals can take 24lbs of boost.

What 's your intention with these seals? Are you already building something (Motor apart)? Are you trying to make a better NA renesis or a forced induction application?

I am looking towards building my engine to handle larger amounts of boost than the 6 psi that seems to be the limit right now. This is more of a future project than anything else right now, just because I have to be able to find the time to drive to someone and let them drop my engine and play with it (cuz I wanna watch, which means I have to take vacation time).

I've found that the benefits of these seals (As regards forced induction) are best realised when tuning is already pretty much in the ball park. Those who are experimenting without a known good map and fuel delivery, those who aren't monitoring intake air temps and water temps can come to know regret.
The one piece 3mm Iannetti seals are what are used by Abel Ibarra utilising in the neighborhood of 45 psi to catapult his 8 to over 200 mph in approx 6.7 seconds. The 2 piece variety are the only seals that Jim Downing has used since 1990, often seeing in excess of 100 race hours before a tear down of his R26b 4 rotor engines.
Iannetti seals are truly the best!

I'm shortly going to undertake a 13b project from a Gen2 7, and just reading this thread on the diffrent seal types has made me feel enlightned.. Thanks guys !
I know there is a lot more i have to read up on before starting the project...

for the money, it's really hard to beat rotary aviation seals...
for a little more money, it's even harder to beat stock mazda seals.

I remember asking the same question about 2 piece vs 3 piece apex seals when the renesis came out, and I'm pretty sure the answer was that because there were no longer any peripheral ports, there was no need for the extra movement provided by the 3 pc type as it moved across the exhaust port. Sorry, I can't remember the details...it was a verbal discussion with someone at Mazda Japan 3 years ago...

Furthermore, the seals aren't the limiting factor with regard to boost pressure in the Renesis.
