15,000 mile service necessary??

My 8 is approaching almost 15,000 miles and the dealer guys
suggest to get 15,000 mile service which includes this tune up and
that tune up.
Is it really necessary? because over 300 bux for the service seems
bit heavy for my wallet.
Anyone got theirs done?

Look at page 8-4 of the owner’s manual.

15,000 Oil Change & Lube, Inspect Brakes and clean air filter THAT IS ALL!!!

Hide your wallet and go find a new dealer ASAP!

You only need to do what is in the owner's manual to preserve your warranty. The dealer loves to do all kinds of things to charge you all kinds of money. Unless there is something about the rotary (I don't own one yet) that requires special attention and I doubt it, nothing needs "tuning". Expo1 has it right. No need to ditch the dealer, they will all try to rip you off, just be more knowledgeable about that which you spend lots of money on.

A lot of dealers have these "menus" of "standard" services. A bunch of crap.

Do exactly what the Owners Manual calls out. No more.

My dealer tried to sell me a $500 "package" of crap for my 30,000 mile service and when I said no, offered to do it for $380 instead. Still said no. As everyone else said, all you need is what the manual says to keep your warranty valid.

Didn't someone say that the manual says to perform the 15,000 checkup? I think its useless as well and mine has approached but I don't want to spend $300 for them to change my oil but I also want my warranty honored.

No, you just have to make sure the maintenance described for that mileage was done... which in the case of the 15k point is just another oil change and replace the air filter. 30 minutes of your time if you're a do-it-yourselfer, or $60-$80 if you're not. They can't void your warranty because you didn't buy into the dealer's BS list of things you don't need done. However if your engine fails at 18k and you didn't change your oil or air filter at 15k, then yes, they can possibly void your engine's warranty if and only if these points of negligence caused the failure. Don't be bullied by greedy dealers waving your warranty around like it's some fragile thing.

Do you have to take your car to a dealership or a shop to get the oil changed or can you do it yourself to maintain the warranty? Also, what if you have an aftermarket air filter in the stock airbox and you tell them not to change it, would they void the warranty on that down the road?

You can do it yourself, or have it done anywhere... you just need to keep receipts to prove it was done. I personally keep my oil and oil fitler receipts, as well as a detailed log of maintenance I perform. As for the air filter question- they can only void your warranty on a part (engine in this case) if they can prove the failure of that part was due to the air filter... i.e. if you have a K&N filter that lasts much longer than 15k miles and your engine dies because of some other reason, they cannot blame the after market part. Do some research on the Magnuson-Moss act for more details on your rights.

Thanks for the info!

when I called to schedule my 30k maintenance. They quoted me a time est and price without even asking what kind of car..... . 4 hrs and 450 bucks. I said um no thanks, and went somewhere else. I miss my old dealer.

So uh, I just got a letter in the mail about this...dealer's psychic or what? I just turned over 14K miles, and was considering this. Is it still the general consensus that the 15K service is a rip off? Can I just take it to the dealer and ask for an oil and air filter change? Reason being is that I also want to get my freaking headlight lens replaced...

9G Redline 05-07-2005 02:33 PM

I just had my 15K oil change and they did everything for me w/out charging me. They even gave me the new N flash. I got an oil & filter change. They did something about my airbag, a recall maybe? So I agree with the other, you're dealer's trying to screw you over. Good luck though. My baby's still purring like a kitten and drivin' like a dream.

Mugatu 05-07-2005 02:46 PM

I only did the 15k mile service because it was free with my scheduled maintenance program. :D

dgerald 05-11-2005 02:14 PM

Funny, I just made my 15k mile service appointment about 5 minutes ago, and I find this thread!
My dealer here in Tulsa said they'll rotate and balance tires, change the oil, change the air filter, and give it a full inspection...(I think he mentioned another thing or two, but didn't catch it). Cost is $109
Didn't seem too bad for a little feeling of security (false or not ;) )

dazygirl415 08-30-2005 05:32 PM

I just left a message for my service manager to schedule my 15k service... I'll listen to what she has to say but if it's just an oil and air filter change and checking out the brakes, my oil was changed 2k ago, I just installed a new air filter w/the REVi and the brakes work fine. :D
