09 engine in 04?
Does anyone know if an 09 short block will drop in to an 04?

not a "block" and no it will not just drop in directly

BUT you need to plug the extra OMP nozzle found in 09+ engines. other than that, it's all the same. |
If you plug the extra nozzle then wouldn't that be pretty pointless, why not just go with a s1 engine?

I premix, so the omp plug wouldn't matter. As long as all the manifolds, sensors and motor mounts are the same, that's all that really matters. Right?

This is from the year by year changes.
New fully electric OMP design and oil sump and corresponding engine changes; Dipstick and oil filter location changed; New fuel pump; My main point was why bother with a new 09+ engine if your going to just use it as an 04 engine? If you have a wrecked 09+ rx8 and are wanting to use that engine because its cheaper then I see why but other than that I don't see a reason. I'm not saying don't do it, just curious why. |

The entire front cover was changed as well as the oil pan. I think it should fit though. I'm pretty sure the metering pump is different but if your running premix, you can just leave your old one plugged in right so the car will not go into limp mode? That's how you do it on S5 RX-7s when you swap motors without electric metering pump if your car came equipped.
Also there is a second knock sensor, but you don't have to worry about that either. There's some pictures of a guy selling an 09 on eBay. You can see some of the differences. as jrx pointed out, u don't have to worry about most of the stuff, the location should be the same (talking about like water pump pulley location, main pulley location, etc) and should mount with whatever else you have like A/C and stuff.
yep, OMP is completely different, that's why I said "Short block" should fit, if u include other stuff that will change it into a "Long block" plug the extra hole in the middle, the oil cooler hose location might be different(not 100% sure) that's all I can think of right now, correct me if I'm wrong. BUT ! if u want less confusion, you can just get Reman from Mazda, it's not that expensive right now, or if u want "much better quality" then you should go to Mazmart. they cost more but it's hand build by one of the most famous rotary engine builder in the country. but remember, quality comes with price. but if I'm you I will definitely go with Mazmart and call it a day. |
In another thread someone was saying Mazda quoted them $2000/2500 for a reman but that didn't include labor I'm sure. I think Mazmart should be doing theirs as $4600 base but it may have gone up, their base engine is better though as nycgps pointed out.
