This, that, and '05 key fob...

So, went to dealer today to get N flash and to make sure all recalls had been taken care of. Everything went smoothly and turns out an old friend of mine is now a dealer there. So we talked about cars for a bit and I ended up test driving the Mazdaspeed MX-5. Nice lil thing it was :) Then, somehow I started talking about the new '05 key fobs and said how much I wanted one. He said that honestly they've had problems with it breaking. Anyone had theirs break yet? Nonetheless, they are so freaking neat! :D

Nope--no problems with my key. Ladies, well boppaz at least, take notice to the keys. My guess is because it looks like a Benz unit.

Funny you should ask today. I had a similar discussion with a salesperson at a local dealership and he said the same thing and added that if the key does break off, you are in deep doodoo. (Didn't understand what he meant by that other than possibly it couldn't be put back together.) He also stated that the range of the panic button is much shorter than the earlier key remotes.

What is the difference in the 05 and 04 fobs?????

I wonder if he meant that when you cranked the key in the ignition it would break off from the fob leaving you holding the fob, but the key still lodged in the ignition?

Perhaps a pair of needle-nose pliers for the glove box are called for now...

i just got the 05 key for my '04.. The key does seem a little flimsy at the part where it connects to the remote.. I guess i'll have to see what happens.. If it breaks I will be pissed tho!

Not mine--its pretty sturdy. The difference is that the '05 key is a retractable key fob.

How did you get the 05 key for your 04???? It would be nice to have a retractable key.....one less big thing dangling in my pocket.....

When I went to Mazda to test drive the 05 RX8's, I compared the RX8 key fob to my Audi key. My Audi key felt more heavier and sturdier than the RX8 one. Hopefully they will make it more durable in the future.

ya it's really easy.. The dealership cut the key and got the key working but they forgot to program the remote!!!!

It was easy enuff, turn the car to on then lock position 3 times. There's this weird looking button on the inside of the driver suicide door, hit that 3 times, then hit unlock (or any button) on each of the remotes twice and that's it.

The '05 key is very durable--its less bulky than the pre-01 Benz keys. I can testify that the key sound. In fact, the origin of this rumour that the key is flimsy has no evidence or support whatsoever.
