Underdrive Pulley do or do not?????

So i've been reading up a lot on the under drive pulleys and i want to know if these are a worth while investment. Do i need to buy the kit with all 3 to get the best performance? Will this help me when starting from a dead stop? I just want my car to get to that 4000 rpm mark a little quicker so the power kicks in. Will these pulleys help my revs get up a little faster?

Don't do it unless you get them for free. A local guy here has pullies, MSP catback, MSP flywheel, aftermarket clutch and an MSP intake and he is few tenths slower in the quarter then me still even after tons of practice.

They make your car lighter. There about a .5 pound difference I believe from the AP underdriven crank to Stock

I mean I got an AP underdriven crank pulley sitting in my room, I'll prob but it on just because.

Your butt dyno will prob claim like 5hp

Yeah for weight savings I guess (not that .5 lbs will do anything but less parasitic drag is good) but if you do all the pullies make sure you don't have issues with your ac, alternator, etc. but for the money its as big as waste as a $300.00 intake.

well i got all mine foe less then $100 on ebay....i had to put mine together now they come all three in a kit.

I have one, and can't really say I recommend it. It revs faster, but that appears it. I dont really feel anything on the butt dyno.

yes but you have a pearl knob for teh quick shifts !!!

The pulley adds a little but not anything you would actually notice .

I love my Voodoo but it's getting weird spider cracks in it. I still think driving lessons are the best bang for the buck. If I had a dollar for every time I saw a Miata whoop a Viper or some other badass street car I would be rich.

450rrider14 04-14-2009 08:41 PM

Man you guys are killing me here. Sooo here it is Racing beat catback exhaust, aem cold air intake, cobb accessport by mazdamaniac. After that im just driving the car. lol will i notice anything with this setup other than a really nice sound?

Jon316G 04-14-2009 08:51 PM

If you're looking for "noticeable" (not audible) mods; the AccessPort, mid-pipe/high-flow cat, short shifter, lighter flywheel are your best choices.

On the other side; better tires, suspension, and driving lessons.

450rrider14 04-15-2009 07:15 AM

I just bought a short shifter and a lighter flywheel but im having a hard time finding where to put them on my AT, ive gotten the best results with them in my trunk but i don't know. Lol ya im pretty sure im just going with that setup

philipchan 04-15-2009 05:42 PM

I got the SR whole set of pulleys, 3 of them
I would say it worths...
especially for my 4 AT...better low end

Fail. AT's don't have flywheels. Return that thing immediately or sell it !

HWK11 04-15-2009 06:45 PM

return the short shifter too.

450rrider14 04-17-2009 07:25 AM

lol i was kidding thats why i was saying i put them in my trunk. I didnt really buy that stuff lol. And I do have a 4 port, so is it good for four ports, and not for six ports?

2SeeKU 04-17-2009 07:36 AM

I think he means 4AT, not the ports.

I did quite alot of searching when l was looking to buy the pulleys. I found that more people were disappointed then not, but l guess everyones butt dyno is different :).

mscamp02 04-17-2009 08:30 AM

I have an AP pulley and it does rev faster which is kinda cool, but as far as performance, cant say I really see much of anything

450rrider14 04-19-2009 04:21 PM

Well, on a different note, just wanted to get some opinions on which intake i should get.

  1. AEM cold air intake
  2. K and N typhoon 2
  3. Racing Beat

Just looking for some input.

I want an intake that will give me the most possible HP, and of course sounds good. And yes i know ill be getting like 3 HP

mscamp02 04-19-2009 05:15 PM

^If you can get an AEM get it now (production has stopped due to a K&N buyout
after that racing beat
after that K&N

A dumb question I've allways wondered, if you supercharge or turbo the 8, does the pulleys need to come off and use pulleys out of the particular supercharger or turbo kit, or can they remain on?

Brettus 05-06-2009 01:54 PM

/\ I took my AP underdrive pulley off after going turbo because I have reduced the redline and wanted maximum water flow at lower engine speeds . For SC I believe the correct pulley would come with the kit.

09Factor 05-07-2009 11:14 AM

Well here is an idea no one posted yet.
Replace the water pump with the Mazparts Re-medey pump. The Stock pump cavitates 4k + and cavitation induces drag. See where I'm going here? plus added benefit of more coolant flow.

hk8 05-07-2009 07:52 PM

from what i've read here, so the pulley dont do much of a performance gain? what about in a 6MT rx8? would it do much at all in term performance gain?

I had mine for several years.
Can't say I noticed a difference with the AP pulley.

Razz1 05-08-2009 12:30 AM

I would like to get everything I can out of the car.. but we did a test with a thermoeter.

Stock AC is 2 to 4 degrees cooler without the under drive pully.

Not worth the 1HP gain for me.
