turbocharger on a AT - Is it a big performance boost?
Hi, this is my first post on this forum but i have been browsing its pages for a few weeks now. I have a few questions about turbocharging the rx8 on a AT, and also involving the Cobb Accessport.
1.Does a Greddy turbo add a noticeable amount of power on an AT? Basically, I want to know if it would be worth the upgrade on an AT. And I will be getting a 6 port AT 2.Does the Cobb AP remove the speed limiter on the AT models? I have read on Mazdamaniac's site that it does, but I have read otherwise on this forum. 3. Is a turbo reliable? 4. How would I go about changing the redline to 9k in an AT? I have seen it someone do it on this site but I wasn't sure how it was done. Can the Cobb do this? Oh, and my name is Steven and I am 17 years old. I will likely be getting the RX8 in about 6 months. I know it's early to be thinking abut a turbo but I just want to know the answers. And I know manual > auto but I don't want to have to deal with a MT in LA traffic. Sorry if these questions have already been answered; could you just post the link and I will check them out. Thanks Steven |
learn to drive a manual before you attempt to turbo. ;)

no - one on here has really got a decent result turboing the AT so far . If they have it has not been well documented . However there is no reason you could not get a 4 port AT to 250whp easily just with the Greddy kit .
Make sure you get a 6 port if you want better than that . |
09Factor has enjoyed his turbo 4-port quite a bit.

Thanks Steven 1. Yes it is capable. 2. No 3. Depends on how you drive and maintain the car. 4. AccessPort |
Yea i have a 05 auto as well n was thinking of going FI but i rather just switch it to a manual first then turbo it :).

Is that your first engine? How much power are you aiming to make? How familiar with cars are you? How much are you willing to invest? What other modifications have you done on your car? Is there anything wrong with your car right now? |
It's strange that so many people with auto's or 4 port engines wonder if forced induction is worth it or can be a worthwhile performance gain. My response to that is that there are a bunch of awfully fast 1.6L turbocharged Civics running around out there and you guys started with more power.

So i can decide what i can do for it.. current mods are Racing beat exhaust 3'' and rp supercat midpipe..thats it..im still using my freaking stock air intake!! |

Yes it my first engine and it has 45km on it.. I'm aiming for 250hp + ? Our stock hp now should be around 140hp for ther 4at rx8 after dynoed .. this is what i found on forums..and i found a reasonable price used greddy turbo kit..but im afraid it will give me hell lot of trouble and also blow engine..i just want my 8 slightly faster with the bolt on greddy kit without throwing out so much money on it or giving me so much trouble..

For the base Greddy kit, as long as the turbo and parts weren't made crappy, and as long as you don't change it out without being knowledgeable (increase the turbo without changing the wastegate, etc), then it shouldn't give you any trouble. |
There is absolutely no reason why a 4 port couldn't be made to easily break 300 rwhp.

I myself would see a budget of maybe $10-12k total in a turbo project. Whatever HP I can get out of that, I'd be happy with. |

There is some doubt over what boost he was running at the time - perhaps as much as 18 psi so it's going to take someone with a few balls to want to push that far . |

Totally agree . If anyone has any doubts they just need to see Chickenwafers' latest dyno where he made 330whp before the aux. ports opened on his 6MT . At that point his motor was a 4 port ......

If I had a 4 port RX-8 and a $10K-$12K budget, I'd get 400 rwhp out of it.

That was with the AP Dyno mode. Actual Dyno is this coming Sunday. So we'll see what she does. I was thinking a little bit less than that. But if it does that!
