When i talked to the engine builder last night he said the piece that broke off my rear housing was put back in place with a bead of silicone holding it on to look like nothing happened. He also said that it appears that the rotor that was in the housing that originally blew was re-used. Only the rotor housing was replaced but i paid for both a housing and a rotor.

The person that rebuilt my engine before him is banned from the forum now.

Yikes. I am worried about your current builder though, typically the RX-8 rotors are milled to accept the RX-7 seals, you don't shave down the RX7 apex seals.

Dont get me wrong the ecu is prob the best aftermarket piggy back system, but if just doesnt drive like a factory car anymore.

decel it goes bloody rich rather then lean out like factory ecu, and trust me you feel it.

Before anyone bashes me with bad tuner comments.

I flew the creator of adaptronics, Andy down from Brisbane to Melbourne for it, great bloke, great product. But the factory ECU imo retains the OEM feel best hands down.

Look to further clarify the difference

The Adaptronic being a piggy back will loose the OEM feel of the car, slight throttle lag (which can be minimise through tuning), use more petrol.

Benefits are, on the fly tuning, instant changes, easier to monitor, ability to use aftermarket O2 sensor, boost sensor, further fine tuning.

In a nut shell, MAF ecu tuning provides a better overall feel to the car and can work just as well as aftermarket ecu.

After market ecu, is better for more drastic setups where the MAF is no longer able to cope, or if you find yourself unable to log and have a tuner more used to MAP style tuning. Also definately better for track only cars

RE: rich/ no overrun on decel -- I think I covered how to get throttle overrun working at some point. Something doesn't sound right if Andy couldn't figure that out with you, as him and I exchanged a couple messages about it a year or so ago. It works... problem is you lose control of 2% of your throttle travel.

don't have much to say about your other observations... I came from a MAF based tune, its my DD, and can't say I've ever noticed any throttle lag.

I do agree about MAF tuning being better... not because MAF systems are better, but because you're staying within the walled garden Mazda built for you. Problem is it takes a fuggin rocket scientist to be good at it.

maybe thats what he said but we are using RX8 seals.

9krpmrx8 10-31-2013 05:36 PM

Well I hope he knows what he is doing man, but the fact that he doesn't know that is a bit scary.

I think you misunderstood. He said there was some work involved to make them fit. I wasn't sure what he was saying. I just know we are using RX8 seals so there shouldn't be any problems.

9krpmrx8 11-01-2013 09:50 AM

Ah, okay. Your comment about him stating the RX7 seals would have to be ground down is what scared me,

said banned engine builder should be banned from building engines too :suspect:

Nice.

might be crappy pics but the build quality looks good.

I'm starting to leak again thru the GReddy's main seal. I think I've figured out my (almost) annual turbo rebuild as a result of it.

Ready for it…… COLD WEATHER

Thanks everyone, I can't wait to get this beast back on the road. It's been almost 4 years now. There are so many changes that are being made.

DMaverickRX8 01-13-2014 07:48 PM

Moved a few times, was unemployed for a while, had other things to occupy my time and money. Now I've been at my job almost 3 years now and finally have the means to get it done right.

I know where your coming from. I went unemployed for a few months and just recently got a job at interstate. Otherwise mine would have been swapped already. I'm just glad i finally found a job.

Congrats on everything. :) it looks sick as f-&&

Bryan has rebuilt my turbo twice.

DMaverickRX8 01-13-2014 09:54 PM

Hope I don't catch flak but arent 4 ports more reliable w/boost than the 6 port? How many miles on yours shelldude?

ShellDude 01-13-2014 10:07 PM

they're arguably easier to tune … simplified injector scaling + no APV … you could say about the same for the S2.

70,000 miles on the odometer -- boosted since 22,000 miles so right about 50k boosted over 4 years… original motor

nuke0907 01-18-2014 05:19 AM

Heard from my builder this week. He got the car running again. He showed me a couple videos and the idle is spot on and the car will shift into gears with no problems anymore.

The only thing he said he was concerned about was a clicking on the SSV. He said he moved it by hand and the clicking would stop. Looks like i will have to have the SSV cleaned.

He's gonna break a few things down now to install some of the upgraded components I got. It will definitely be an interesting build when he's done. I cannot wait to get this car back on the road.
