Trans fluid and diff fluid

I am going to change the trans fluid this week with AMSOIL, the auto transmission is 8.7 liters.

I will post back a review this weekend.

Just wondering is there a diff fluid for the auto tranny? If yes, what would you guys recommend?

I believe the diff on the auto is essentially the same as the one on the manual, except the ratio. Only exception would be the very base model auto that doesn't have an LSD. For my diff I used Redline 75w90 Gear Oil, and Royal Purple Max Gear 75w90 is also good from what I've read on here.

Thanks for your reply.

Whats the best stuff for diff fluid for auto tranny? should I use the same type of what manual use even the ratio is different?

The diff fluid (1.3l capacity) is entirely separate from the transmission, and the ratio doesn't matter in regards to the fluid. Sorry for confusion there. :)

You'd want to use a 90 weight gear oil meeting the GL-5 standard according to 10-5 in the owner's manual. Both the Redline 75w90 gear oil and Royal Purple Max Gear 75w90 meet these requirements. There are also many other gear oils out there that would do, but those are the two I read about on here. Search and you'll see either is fine, use whatever you can get.

My local Autozone only had the Mobil 1 when I went in to get the fluid for my new diff. Used that and so far it has worked fine. If I had more time I might have tried to find the RL or RP. But I had used Mobil1 on my pickup's diff with no problems, so I really wasn't worried.

Thanks for the reply.

was the RP Max Gear 75w90 is synethic? Can I use that or the non-synethic?

The Max Gear is synthetic, as is Redline, and the Mobil1 mdw1000 mentioned (I assume it is this?). I haven't really heard of using non-synthetic in the diff, I believe even the OEM fluid is synthetic.

For the diff fluid, yah. Suppose to take 1.3l, but you'll probably end up using 1.5 or so after spilling some and such.

where do you guys get the gasket for the pan? the dealer didnt even pull it up without the pan along with. and autozone/orilly's didnt have it either??

Jasonawojo Nov 21, 2007 10:18 PM

I found this on Onlinemazdaparts.com. They have a gasket and filter there under Automatic Transmission, not entirely sure if thats it though as I don't have an AT. http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...layCatalogid=0

Pan gasket? do we need one when doing Gear fluid change or the ATF fluid change?

ATF, the diff just uses a drain plug and fill plug.

This is the only AT fluid DIY that I found on here, and on there it mentions you needing a new AT pan gasket in order to change the fluid as you drop the AT fluid pan to get the fluid out. Not sure if there is any other way of doing it..?

Yup, that links to the Mobil1 that I used.

Ok I am just doing this for clairity.
The Diff oil is differential oil, axle oil, rear end oil. 75w or higher.
The Transmission oil is totally different and has to be changed by removing the trans oil pan and gasket.
I just want it clear what the OP was asking about since some terms used were kinda fuzzy.

THis winter I have already doing major oil changed for my car

10 x AMSOIL ATF @ $11.99 each (you only need 9.5 bottle, only 8.7 liter needed)
2 x Royal Purple @ $12.99 each (you only need 1 1/4 bottle then is full)
1 x Castol 5W30 @ $13.99 each

All things have been changed, there is a difference of accerlation but not a big big change. Thats all I have to say.

Sounds good, how hard did changing the ATF turn out being?

R888 Nov 29, 2007 08:54 PM

The guy didn't take off the oil pan, he took off the hose connector instead and then hoock up his flush machine relasing all the old oil and it was dark smelly!!! he hooked up the return hose for the new oil.

Then he pour all 9.5 bottles of AMSOIL in the machine and when the machine push the old oil out the new ones get in....

NO NEED TO TAKE OFF THE PAN...but he said he was firm that the old oil gets out competley. =)

I think is a must for 50k car, it brought back the memory when I first drive it on the road.

R888 Dec 9, 2007 12:29 PM

After 2 weeks, I don't think the AMSOIL make a big difference, but the royal purple differntial fuild did.

R888 Dec 19, 2007 08:43 PM

After months now, still feel the difference. Maybe was it because its winter?

Atilla Dec 19, 2007 08:58 PM

Hey thanks for the write up -

I'm about to get a tranny flush n' replace it with RP Max by the end of the month only because i found a place that has it in stock for about $8 U.S. - i'll be sure to post up my results on here too.

R888 Jan 6, 2008 10:22 PM
