SSV failed the 3rd time!

My SSV failed the third time, first time i changed and spent about 600 dollar parts and labor, second time i just pay for the labor, this time i gave and thinking about let it be.
Could it be KN typhoon filter causing it, I just don't know. or because san francisco is cold.
does it matter if i just leave it be?

What part of the SSV failed? Need to give some more details.

I change the whole solenoid.

Kane 12-26-2008 01:37 PM

So the solenoid is bad? Did you try to cycle the SSV by hand and check for vacuum leaks?

I make sure that the valve isn't stuck and then - I check to make sure a vacuum pump will hold it open; then move on to the solenoid. No harm in leaving it stuck open - just loss of power.

To check the solenoid I swap it with the VFAD solenoid and see if it works.

The thing is I don't want to check the problem anymore, even if I fix it, or change a new one, it will get stuck again, you know what I mean. I need to find a solution to stop this ssv problem. Can I just have it close the whole time?

Kane 12-26-2008 01:49 PM

Yeah you can - but again you will lose power; I would force it open the whole time - not shut.

You would be much better to have it open all the time than closed.

There must be something strange going on with this though..because it is really a simple vac actuated valve. The solenoid supplies a vac and the valve opens...no vac and it stays closed

Like Kane said...check for....vac leak, solenoid, trigger signal to solenoid..and the actuator...(if it is not holding a vac..it will not stay open) after that if the valve is free to move..there isn't anything much else to go wrong

If the solenoid has been replaced three times..I would bet they didn't find the real problem..could be wiring....an intermittent break in the wire..

It is easy to tell if the valve is stuck....just try the lever off the actuator...you should be able to turn it by hand and open/close the valve.

If your car doesn't get warmed upp fully and you drive it short distances in the winter..the valve may freeze stuck...this will set the CEL....but it will open after it is warmed up properly.....

Hope this rant helps...... :)

Thanks for the Infro! I don't really feel the power loss, the 4AT dont have much power to begin with, and I do warm up and drive fair amount of distance, and i love to rev and floor the pedal. Do you thing that can be the reason?

dannobre 12-27-2008 06:10 PM

I can't see how your driving habits will effect that. If you babied it and drove it like a grandma that could.......

Check the diagnostics and see if you can figure it out.....it might be the position switch too...if it opens and closes...but the switch isn't working it will think it isn't moving

my engine have rattle really hard and i know its because the 2004 rx8 motor mount is bad, the only way to correct it is to buy 05 and above and swap it. How much $ do you think it will cost?

Here is a uneducate guess, do you think my SSV failed maybe relate to the engine's tough rattling?
