Squeal at idle/low rpm
What's up everyone, got a question on a 05 AT 4port with 80K miles. I'm having a squeal noise when the rpm's are at idle or drop to the 750 mark. If I raise the rpm to around 1K or higher it goes away. I get a quick chirp/squeal when I put it in Drive or Reverse from Park or Neutral while I'm on the brake, if I put it in Drive from Neutral but be slightly on the gas (around 1000-1300 rpm or so) it won't do it. When in Neutral I don't hear it but sitting still in Drive it will be there. I've read several posts about people having a chirp at startup, I don't get it at startup or I'm not hearing it if it's happening at that time. Those issues pointed to some kind of jet air nozzle and timing during cold startup and I was wondering if my problem could be related to the same jet air nozzle. I was also thinking it could be the accessory belt? I JUST replaced plugs/coils/wires last week. It is time for an oil change and that is happening this weekend. Any idea's or suggestions?
Thanks |

Yes however it's not really a rattle but more of a squeal like if you started a car with a belt that slipped, that kind of sound. Doesn't happen when moving or in Neutral, only in D or R.

Also, check the engine mounts. |
At an idle put the car in 1st manual mode. With your foot on the brake. Then shift it into second while still stopped. If the noise changes it's the engine mounts. Or one of them . More than likely would be the right side.
|
I am pretty sure that is the engine mount, most likely is the right one just like EASY E1 said. My car have been rattle/squealing over 6 months now, i am just too lazy to get it fix. I know how annoying it is.
Just buy a good used one and replace them, after that go get a engine damper to support it. |
I had that same problem on my 4port AT. For me it ended up being the belts. just replace them. They are pretty cheap
|
When I first got my 04 AT with 44k, it too had a squeal. I checked my belts and they were fine. The noise seemd to be comming from the pulley. A little bit of lube and the sound went away.

I would have someone change the gears into R or D while you look under the hood to see if you can isolate the sound. Make sure it is someone you trust. Little bros can be more of a pain and break things more often then they actually help lol. Since you do not hear this under load, I do not think its the motor mounts. It is probablly a pulley or a belt squeaking when it hits the 750 rpm area. Normally in N, you idle a little bit higher then when you are in gear. All belts wil eventually squeak. When they do the temporary fix is spraying them with belt dressing or using some lithium grease to lube it. The best fix is replacing the belt.

Yeah I'm going to try and pick up some of that belt spray soon. Is it alright to spray it on the belt before I start the car or does it need to be running when I spray it?
|
There is a possibility it's the belt idler pulley. Mine makes noise. Awfully hard to diagnose these things over the interwebs.

I have the same problem too and have been living with it for over a year. the sound seems like it is coming from the right side. the only thing i do to stop the noise is put it in "N" while i am at a stop or a red light. have you figured out the problem?
They're crap. ;) |

More than likely a bad engine mount. They go bad easily. They don't last.

I had my engine replaced in Oct 09, since then no problems. I don't know if it was mounts or what but it happened all the time until it died, maybe it was low compression (cause of engine failure) causing it I don't know. If they don't give new mounts on engine replacement that probably isn't it since it's fine now.

Bump. Having the same problems on my 04 AT and wondering if anyone has solved this? I'll check my belts and pulleys as well.
The main problem I'm having is that when I'm parked and put my car in drive, I hear this metal on metal rattle that is EXTREMELY annoying and have been trying to figure out how to fix it. I'm also getting vibrations while idling in D with my foot on the brake. I had it looked at by the dealer, and they say the passenger side engine mount is bad, but when I looked at it, there was no obvious sign of it being bad, nor oil leaking. I'm about to replace it anyways hoping to fix the problem, but the metallic rattle is the most annoying. It shakes the whole car from the backend (since the tranny and engine are connected directly). I've noticed though if when I put it in drive and quickly give it a little gas to raise the rpms, I can avoid the metallic rattle and vibrations ever so slightly, which leads me to believe my problem is related to either the engine mount, a tranny mount, or a possible heatshield, but I'm not certain. Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thanks. |
could it be a rattling catalytic converter?
