Should I Even Mod my AT!?

So I'm 17 and I have a 2005 Rx8 I bought with 32,000 Miles on it and I'm In love. The thing is the longer I spend on here the more I want to upgrade my AT with Cold Air intakes Pulleys exaust, Etc.

Should I just wait until next year and use my car a a down payment for a MT or Mod my AT then eventually swap.

Any advice would be awsome

Atilla 05-19-2009 01:17 PM

well - what are you looking to do?

It doesn't seem like you've had the car for a long time - why don't you familiarize yourself with your car first (like seeing what it can do), then look to modify with things you feel that you need.

It's an easier route than simply jumping ship or going too far down the road to come back ya know?

ATX Mazda Fresh 05-19-2009 01:22 PM

I've Had it for about almost a year er like 9 months I know what it can do but im more looking for it to be a show car/drift. Racing is not my thing I mainly want drift specific mods I feel like its impossible to drift in an AT
I want some show in my engine like the greddy turbo but for the amount of money im going to blow into this thing i need to make sure I want it to be AT

Gr8Bullet 05-19-2009 01:24 PM

with my AT im gunna at least get some exhaust some exterior mods for a simple swap later when i get a MT

Atilla 05-19-2009 01:25 PM

lol - umm yeah, drift? Yeah, get an MT.

just out of curiousity though - why are you interested in trying to drift?

dozer 05-19-2009 01:26 PM

your AT will not drift...its hard enough to do it in the MT, i say if you stick with your AT go suspension mods and appearance mods, any engine mods will yield less power than the MT...

Gr8Bullet 05-19-2009 01:26 PM

At's cant drift only powerslide just throw down lots of water on your back wheels

dozer 05-19-2009 01:27 PM

^use windex instead

Gr8Bullet 05-19-2009 01:28 PM

i got some lime sented windex lol

Well I lived in Japan for 6 years while I was there I was too young to participate in the tracks so al lmy friends let me ride with them ever since then it fun for me

Exterior mods seem like they way to go for right now

I've been taking it in parking lots burning out seeing what I can do but other then turning a flooring it im not getting the back out

someone told me to rip the E but im not positive on doing that haha

Atilla 05-19-2009 01:30 PM

Personally - if you're not serious about going with some sort of FI (t/c, s/c, no2) and you're not thinking of going full show - then you should look to go w/an MT. Not only for your sake, but for the sake of others when you add an intake or exhaust and complain about how there's almost no increase in power.

hmmm - You're better off getting an MT. Like i previously stated - it seems that the things you want to accomplish with the car are outside of it's boundaries. You'd end up tearing apart the tranny trying to pull that off.

here's a tip though: If you're gonna start learning how to drift - IGNORE the person that told you to 'rip the E'. There's far more to it than that. I highly suggest doing EXTENSIVE homework before attempting to drift. You might also want to start with a better platform as well. I'm going with an FC.

Ha so as you can tell I havent really been on this forum long so all this hip lingo "Fc" and stuff no idea lol I have to learn mind telling me lol

anyway yea the e brake I really never want to because im not sure of the condition of my trann i dont want to mess it up

Thanks for the tips though Ima try to get some rims soon so I can post up some pictures lol its all stock right now putting up pics would be pointless

Atilla 05-19-2009 05:31 PM

heh -

FC = 2nd generation rx7 :)

p.s. - pulling the E won't mess up your tranny. And i'm serious about doing the homework on drifting before you get into it - it'll save you a lot of money in the end.

Yea I haven't done anything drastic with my car yet and don't plan too I'm trying to read up and so far only advice is for MT's

I wonder.... How much would an FC cost I'm looking for mabye a 98' Thinking mabye iono suggestions lol?

Atilla 05-19-2009 05:37 PM

yeah, don't bother trying to drift an A/T seriously...

If you're TRULY serious about drifting - stick with an MT.

hehe - FC's were only made from 1986-1988. A 1998 rx7 would be an FD.

ZumnRx8 05-19-2009 05:37 PM

Drifting is probably the most expensive of all the sports....drift/drag/show/ ur gonna need suspension+weight reduction+Power (FI)+lots of tires+ Some wheels+ BBK+....dont think its gonna happen...maybe if it was a 240 then u can get parts for cheap...but RX8 dont think so...or im sure we'd all have drifting 8's

ATX Mazda Fresh 05-19-2009 05:43 PM

I think I might then just go ahead and buy an 88 fc cause those have been on my list

as far as my 8 goes I still wanna roll in style so made like a Body kit, spoiler and rims for the time being, I'm about to go to college and I get 850 a month for living expenses mabye I could buy a cheap fc

I just really want to drift for fun though not really into competition right now

RxMadness 05-19-2009 08:05 PM

If you're planning on drifting you will need a manual, though I'd advise you to be extremely careful doing this and have a strong budget set aside to replace tires and anything you break. If you still want to mod the one you have before trading, I suggest getting only parts that can swap onto the manual. As much as I'd love to add boost, I really am not motivated to do it on my AT. I'll just be going with bolt ons (intake/exhaust/suspension) over the next 2 years that I can swap onto my next 8 (MT) or sell if I decide to go with something else.

2SeeKU 05-20-2009 04:57 AM

Wrong car if your planning to drift, let alone the transmission.

Get a GTO, insane amount of toque to be had, for little money spent.

Back on topic, I've got an AT, VERY disappointing in terms of toque/off-the-line performance (Hell, a mazda 6 can beat the AT RX8 off the line. Maybe because l used to drive a V8?). But, the car still puts a smile on my face every day l drive it. I've installed an AEM intake, grounding kit, radiator/air diverter, Borla exhaust and not one of them has added any real performance gains. The thing is, this car is tweaked so well out of the factory, that the only real power adders are your FI kits. This isn't like a GTO, where you can add a CAI and a mafless tune and gain 50-80kw.

I'd say if you really NEED more power, go with the manual. Otherwise, just mod the auto for the fun of it. Just don't expect too much out of bolt-on parts...

Oh, and get a starter button, best mod ever!

ZumnRx8 05-20-2009 06:51 AM

ive always been wanting to look into that^^^^ we'lll see...maybe...

ATX Mazda Fresh 05-20-2009 12:48 PM

But then again I see some online videos of a 8 drifting and it looks really good! what if when I buy My 8 MT I buy a 4th stage clutch or 2nd stage with suspension and the works and buy cheap ass tires for the rest of my life?

would that work?

Cause as much as I love drifting I really love rx8's for some reason untold XP

Ive also been looking at rimz and found some really good Konig Are they good?

dozer 05-20-2009 01:02 PM

4th stage clutch are you serious? dude your stock is good enough...

Easy_E1 05-20-2009 01:07 PM

We sponsor the Falken RX8 drift car. It's not a "regular" RX8.

Read this,,,,
Falken Tire Mazda RX-8

If I were you I would do SCCA SOLOII Auto crossing or try your hand at NASA HPDE. Both of those programs will give you driving experience that you need.
Being the age that you are it would be beneficial to learn how to control the car at higher speeds. Rather than just try and do it on the street or in a parking lot.
You have years of experience and knowledge to gain.

I drive an AT and do very well with both these programs.

So your saying that 8's can be good for drifting cause I would much rather drift in my 8 then go buy a fc or something

That clutch is good for 600+ WHP. Are you going to get that out of your RX8, No.

You should mod it. Ive been hearing a lot from my friends "why mod it when its an auto" etc. but now i dont really give a crap haha i juss do it anyways. Also i am willing to part it out when i sell it so i dont see too much money loss.

Fortunate Few 05-25-2009 09:55 PM

im modding my AT but im keeping all my stock parts. im trading in my car for an MT next may and i'll be swapping all my parts over.

ATX Mazda Fresh 05-27-2009 01:07 PM

So apparently I'm walking down my hallway of my school and this kid who drives a Protege or camry says my car is a chick car...WTF is that!? the world only consists of male and female of course a girl can drive it how the hell is it female?

Fortunate Few 05-27-2009 01:53 PM

09Factor 05-27-2009 02:42 PM
