In response to the first poster; I recall reading in one of my many car mags that I get in the mail that HKS makes a racing/AT for our car. If you want I can find the artical and quote what is states. If not email HKS see whats cracking. Also in the last 2 or 3 issuse of Turbo they had a yellow RX-8 on the cover it had a racing trans in it. Its an arm an a leg but its sweet!!!

Thanks Dominion, I'll look into this also.

I checked their site and can not find any mention of any transmissions or upgrades to the 8 tranny. If you do not mind could you look up the article that was in one of you mags. Presently their site does not allow an message to be sent.

DOMINION 06-26-2007 06:18 PM

Yup will do. I'll post a quote from the mag on here by Friday.

Yes the stock 8 does employ a fuel cutoff at the stock maximum RPM setting but does not seem to cut off fuel during shifting. With the interceptor x installed, the fuel cutoff at Stock RPM is gone. There very well may me a separate tranny control computer or at the very least a section of the stock computer that controls it, but that's a question for the electronic brains like MM or RG. I have seen a couple of threads where members have talked about "I think that it's the same tranny" but have not yet seen a thread where anyone knows for sure.

I was told some time back by someone on this site that the AT RX-8 shares the same Tran as the AT RX-7?

09Factor 06-27-2007 10:12 PM

^^ You heard right. Shares it with the 3rd Gen 7. No certain about the 2nd gen.
It has a slightly different valve body..

So Phil, How's the project coming along?

Phil's 8 06-28-2007 07:53 AM

Everything seems to work slow with my projects. Ray will be here this weekend to complete the s/c install (I HOPE). Not to throw a bad light on Rays expertise just that Murphy seems to have found a corner in my garage to live. I am fumigating tonight and hope Murphy moves on. If a package arrives on time from Pettit my s/c should be in and operational by Sunday evening. If Ray has enough time he's going to critique my "transmission problems" and make recommendations. I did not get a chance to get flamed on the 7 site as my post was removed quickly (don't know why, my post was pleasant) but I did get an anonymous email telling me that the 3rd gen 7 tranny was compatible and I see that you agree. A little more checking and I found that there are tranny upgrades for that a/t transmission. More to come on this later as I now need a source for those upgrades and what is really available.

Have you entertained http://www.levelten.com/

Some peeps on some of the VAG groups have done this for big turbo kits... just tossing it out there...

Thanks - I sent them an email to see what they offer.

ranmcc 06-28-2007 10:48 AM

Nice... keep us posted... I would like to know if it works out for ya...

I have a MT... but just curious if it works for ya!

09Factor 06-29-2007 03:54 PM

Hey Phil,

I spoke with Mike at level10.com and they have a shift kit and a Tq for us.
It should be posted on thier website in a month or two.
Are you sitting down?

$3876 for the shift kit and $1250 for the Tq. :Eyecrazy: The Tq is a billet design. So I would assume that it a little lighter and the stamped OEM one.

I didn't get to talk to him to long as my phone was cutting in and out.
The more we talked the 8's tranny has a slighly diffrent valve body.
I'm not sure how diffrent just yet. I wonder if Paul at mazmart would know

I also found this link. It's for Rx-7 transmissions. It's in Vegas Also

Somewhere closer to you to try.

The R4A-EL RE4-RO1A transmission used in the 93-94 7 may have the same clutch plates and such gears. also looks like this model of transmission was used for some nissans/infinity vhiecles.

Just a though...

ranmcc 06-30-2007 10:34 AM

oh yeah... I left out some of the pricing on purpose... that's not bad... I've heard of kits around $6k...

should have got the stick ;-)

09Factor 06-30-2007 11:39 AM

Since it's not a mainstream car it will be higher. . It's no Ford 350..

I'm not complaining about the lack of stick. just trying to help a fellow soon-2-b FI auto owner.

Nice sig.

09Factor does the shift kit improves a lot?

What does it help in general?

09Factor 06-30-2007 12:08 PM

not sure just yet.

I thinking that since a billet tq is lighter it would rev a little quicker, hence better throttle response. It has a triple plate clutch in it.

For the kit better solenoids to hold a higher line pressure. Also has a different fluid pump.

I didn't talk long enough to get too many tech specs.

My god, the Mazda trans parts company you found in Vegas is real close to my shop. I know of the shop but did not know of their involvement with Mazda Trannys. I will investigate.

Ray and Dave are still here working on my s/c (I'll let them tell you more after a 5 hour drive and 14 hours of work so far) so when they are done I'll do a little more toward the tranny.

Special thanks for the active members, 09factor and Phils 8. YOu guys are the man!!!

I am just curious that if I go Turbo the RE Amemiya turbo kit can reach to 260ps after proper tuning (not sure if it is 260WHP. The Pettit SC stage 2 will be 200WHP but it was louder under the hood, correct me on those if I am wrong.

RE Amemiya dyno
http://www.re-amemiya.co.jp/rx_8/rx_8_at.html

Pettit also claimed the stage 3 will be max out @ 250WHP for 4 speed. Mazsport turbo 1 kit (T4 turbo) can go to 400WHP but that was for MT cars only.

Another question is can our tranny handle 300WHP without mods on it?

Please let me know.....but my heart still with the turbo because of the boost and it is quiet.

Phil's 8 07-03-2007 07:07 AM

The Pettit super charger is in and working. It works better than advertised (sure do like that sound). Charles R. Hill with Chickenwafer's assistance did an outstanding job. The upgraded map from Pettit worked very well. While I am happy about the way the s/c works, I need to temper it with my new problem. The AT no longer has manual mode and the tranny is having a little trouble (actually a whole lot) shifting. This has been my concern ever since I decided to go FI. The car is drivable so I am going to go at this slow and try and get some opinions on what is happening before I go off half cocked and throw money at it I'll contact some of the experts and ask them. Just wondering if the transmission control module could have malfunctioned? Could the tune effect the shifting and/or the transmission control module? At my request we set a red-line cutoff point of 8500 RPM to keep my over-active foot from trying to exceed 9000 - could that have something to do with it?.

Atilla 07-03-2007 08:29 AM

:Eyecrazy: :Eyecrazy: :Eyecrazy: :Eyecrazy:

no more manual mode?! NOOOOO!!

ranmcc 07-03-2007 08:57 AM

That adds insult to injury... as if it's not hard enough having an auto... then to not have the manny mode... hope you get this fixed immediately so you can get full enjoyment out of that supercharger...

mdw1000 07-03-2007 11:50 AM

Did this happen in conjunction with the SC install, or was it independent of it?

Phil's 8 07-03-2007 03:44 PM

Cam called. He asked me to reinstall the factory air flow meter and reset. He tells me that this should be a fix for that problem as the tranny needs the input to operate. Some how it makes sense as we did not find vacuum lines to the tranny. I'll post the results tomorrow. Sounds like an instructional woops.

MazdaManiac 07-03-2007 03:57 PM

Why would you take out the flow meter? That is one sure fire way to go to CEL purgatory.
Is that the only sensor you deleted?

chickenwafer 07-03-2007 04:39 PM

Jeff, you will have to confirm with Ray as I think that is the only sensor we took out- it's still physically under the hood but tucked away. They said not to use it if you have an Int-X.
