RX8 A/T w/ Intercpetor -X

Ok, Since i was one of the 4 people to install and tune my RX8 when Scott was out here in So. Cal, I thought i'd drop some thoughts and impressions also for the AT community.
Some of my experiences and results in my car are similar if not the same as DaveFzr wrote about in his first impressions thread. Of course HP's will be different, but the results are very comparable.
One of the first things to notice was a much smoother transition between gears both in auto and manumatic. But more impressive and noticeable was how soon i am going thru the gears. I know Scott will tell you that the Inter-X doesn't change when the transmission shifts, its my impression that the criteria that causes it to shift is occurring much sooner. For example, in auto mode i was at about 28-30 mph and @ 3000 rpm when it would shift from 1st to 2nd. Now it shifts into 2nd before im at 20mph and is at 3000-3200 rpm, when it goes to 2nd its already at 3k rpm and is rolling up the rpms rapidly and im in 3rd a few seconds later. The whole time the feel of the car pulling harder. The responsiveness is always felt as well. Be aware im not "racing" to get to a higher speed, im just driving normal, not babying it or racing it. In auto mode it gives you the feel of the gears are much shorter than before.
If i use manumatic mode im in higher rpms much quicker as well. I can roll up to the beep and shift into 2nd with a noticeable feel of increased torgue. When i shift to the next gear the car shoots into the next rev range without losing any of the torque pull. And 3rd gear is a whole new experience as it is strong all the way thru high rpms, and with shift paddles this car is really fun! You are able to set the rev limiter which cuts fuel with the Inter-X also, so i set mine to allow me to beep shift without cutting off the fuel, very nice!
My plan was to get the Inter-X because i plan to go with a SC when they are available. But with the Inter-X and a hi-flow cat there will a huge difference for this car.
I believe my dyno numbers to start out were @130hp and tuned it finished at 143hp. I dont remember what the torgue results were, but they increased as well. With a Hi-flow cat adding @ 10-12 and a SC, this car could easily see Hp's over 200. At least thats my plan. wish me luck!

Thanx. I will try to keep everyone updated. I will be continueing my observations and how it behaves, as well as a little more fine tuning. I want to set up my cruise values this weekend. I think i can get a little better mpg too.

You can check with Mazsport for pricing, it is about 1600 for the computer I believe.

You wouldn't happen to have a pic of the before and after dynos would you? I'd like to see the stock one (don't get to see many) and the mid-range gains.

I wonder if bumping the limiter up to about 8000rpm would help. My car is still increasing it's pull as it passes redline. There seems to be more power to be tapped up there.

I tried stay up to 8100 rpm in 2nd shift in my 04 (they got 4 speed) then u can hear the beep already. Immediatley I shift, u know there will be 1-2 secs delay. Thats the highest rpm I got and I don't intend to over run the engine since I still got 50k to go b4 the warranty is up.

200 HP will be a good news.

I think there should be a way to override the odmeter and the ecu. I don't know if 4 port is a fact and a single oil cooler. The car has its potenital.

Lets keep our dream alive. I am sure something is up pretty soon.

Is the SC readyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

As a matter of fact that is where i set it. It was noticeably smoother with no cut out.
The way i would describe it now is, I can complete my Rev/Shift without interruption.

We did the dyno runs on two different dynos over the two days. The first machine had me at @ 135 stock. That dyno was reading 5-7 hp's higher than the 2nd dyno.
i finished @ 143 on the 2nd dyno. The numbers were consistently different between the 2 dynos on all 4 cars. That leads me to believe that on the 2nd more reliable dyno i was at @ 130 stock and tuned i was at 143. When i get the dyno report i will put something up.

Just curious, what RPM did you make that power, does it continue to make power after 7500rpm, the redline for auto?

I believe the rpm was between 6k- 7k. I will have to check the dyno report. The power was at the top end, and as it neared redline might have tapered off just a bit, if i recall correctly.

Nice write up. I owe you some pictures. I haven't forgotten just got yanked in 100 diffrent directions.

i expected a little more at the wheels in stock form.

Now if Paul Yaw would build a nice flowing header that would help our low end, then we would start to see more benefit from the 4 port NA renesis that has a after market computer attached.

one more thing Yaw built a 4 port w/ a Motec and headers. Output = 238 hp (low/mid rpm range) at crank.
Hmmmmmmm. We are getting closer people.

just give it time for it to be done right.

I have not. I didnt see the benefit or any increase of HP that high and didnt want to stress the engine or tranny unduely.... That doesnt mean it cant be done.

I believe there is only one type of Interceptor-X. The maps you build or load are what defines how it runs in an AT. It also goes for every individual RX8 out there. But Scott at Mazsports may be able to tell you more if i am incorrect. So yes, I bought an Interceptor-X for an AT.

I think is wise to invest the money when the SC is out, when the SC is out there, there might be something coming up to boost up the sc as well. Since now the interceptor-X has made the AT gain only 15 max @wheel, correct me if I am wrong on that.

Of course, 15 + another 10 for the Super Cat, exhuast, RB intake and maybe header. = 25

130 + 25 is = 155....

Any guys has run the dyno with 160-180 @ wheel? If yes, it is worth to invest. Remember after all this money invest, u are just only as fast as the manual.

Anyone now? tuned with at least 160, let us know the da vinci code!!!!

I plan on getting a hi-flow cat next, soon. And yes, then a SC.
The install was very easy, you must follow the instructions exactly. Anybody should be able to do it. Make sure you read the instructions first!
As far as tuning, once you become familar with the software it is easy to move around in it, and changing a value is as simple as hitting the up or down arrow on your keyboard to make incremental adjustments. The problem with tuning comes from not knowing if the baubble or burp or sluggishness is due to too rich or too lean a mixture and how much more or less to adjust. Thats where a accurate afr gage or experienced tuner is very helpful.

Couple things you should look at.
1. pick up a LM-1 Wideband O2 sensor. Great data logging features.

Sluggishness usually equals rich
Baubble could be lean.
knock/ping == lean

But since your saying changing values is simple, try small increments in the area of the baubble/burp.
knowlege is power my friend.
Good luck.
