Reliability of A/T?

I read this in the SSR turbo thread, but I wanted to open up a new thread so we can get some good discussion on this.

how much hp CAN the auto tranny reliably withstand? is it the hp or the torque that causes problems? And i hear numbers like 300 hp or so, but is there any evidence behind this?

On another note, my friend said he went to an informal meet, where they just took apart the whole car, then started bolting on crap, like intercoolers, and whatnot. Supposedly, he got up to 300 hp before the transmission shook itself to pieces.

On the other hand, that doesn't mean a number like 270 hp is reliable either. Soo....any ideas at how much power the transmission CAN withstand?

it is a old-techonology 4-speed tranny. I would say no more than 250 or 260. The task isn't about the tranny holding that much, it will be harder to get the hp to that level. :)

Screw the old A/T and get one of the electric manuals like they use in Rallye driving. Those can take 400+ hp and 500+ ft lbs. So, rather, I think it is the current tranny that is the problem. They do make 350+ hp automatic trannies (see the Corvette).

Call me a noob, but what is the electric manual? I haven't heard of this before...is this DSG/SMG technology?
