My Automatic Transmission gauge is Jumping from gear to gear. Very Worried!

I have a 2006 AT RX-8, I bought it with 64,xxx miles and my Tranny began acting weird by jumping gears on the gauge and my engine is starting to feel a bit slugish.

Help! I been searching for 2 days now before starting a thread.

Be more specific with the details:

The transmission indicator display on the instrument panel is changing by itself?
What does the display show?
Other than the indicator, what is the transmission actually doing at the same time? Is it actually changing gears?
Auto or Manual mode?
Drive, reverse, neutral, park, or ?
What speed is this occurring?
Accelerating, decelerating, stationary, or ?
What is the service history on the transmission?

mine does something similar where it will change to 4th at 25mph sometimes, in auto mode. Then other times it wants to stay in 2nd at 40mph.

Since Im cash poor atm I just use manual mode, which works just fine. Though I would love to get it fixed, especially if its something I could fix myself

That's normal. How many miles on it and what kind of maintenance has been done?

82000 miles, and I don't know what type of maintenance, other than when I got it I changed the fluid. The mechanic didn't suggest changing anything else with it when I asked what else I should do, it wasnt a transmission shop though.

crazy though that would be a normal thing, as it drives like shit when that happens.

Make sure the fluid level is correct and take it to a transmission shop for some pressure tests.
