my 04 auto seems extra slow... vid

so i was asking about this in another thread but seems all the guys were not sure due to them all driving manuals. so i figured id ask you automatic drivers.

so my car seems to be extra sluggish. been like that since we got it a few days ago. when you floor the gas off the line she rather sluggishly decides to move. and slowly climbs the RPMs through first. only at about 4-4.5k rpms does it seem to wake up a little but still not as much as it should. at least i think. now i know these are not race cars but it seems overly slow and our SUV is faster.

now i do plan to change the plugs and wires today. and maybe do a cat delete. then save a bit and get new coil packs... possibly BHR. after that i plan on cobb AP.

but do you think just maybe a the bad ignition and maybe a clogged cat is slowing it down this much?

it took me over 10 second to get to 60mph

i will take a video of my auto from 0 to 60 and you can compare them..will post it up later..

thanks man

Ricky SE3P 10-19-2011 11:16 AM

what year is the car? mileage? should help others with helping you. id test my 04' AT right now but the weather has me somewhat reluctant to do so. (its been raining nearly 7 days in a row now)

blakem2008 10-19-2011 11:55 AM

here ya go man. dont know if it will help you at all but i did one run with the paddles and one with automatic shifting..

The videos look about the same as far as getting to 60, i can say that after i got mine, if i would push it hard light to light and when i would get to the next light i had no accleration, like to the floor it would barely move and i would have to pull over cut the car off and let it sit for awhile. i was lucky i guess you can see in that we had a storm a little while after and it flooded the engine where i got a new one. But Mazda told me there was a recall on the transmissions, but mine looked fine, so i never figured out why it had the slow accleration after a hard push, but never a issue after the new engine was put in. I hope its nothing major, keep us updated and let us no if you find out anything.

Red_lineRX-8 10-19-2011 01:12 PM

its an 04 auto. greddy exhaust and AEM intake. i have about 66k miles. car ispretty clean but picked it up offf a kid so im sure he pushed this thing pretty hard

PeteInLongBeach 10-19-2011 01:29 PM

I can't find any road test results for the '04 automatic, so can't validate your acceleration time. Keep in mind that the '04/'05 automatics were 4-speed transmissions and a 4-port engine, so they are slower than all the other models. Yours does not seem exceptionally slow, but I have nothing to compare it to (mine is a 6-speed auto / 6-port motor).

Your car appears to have around 67,000 miles. These early models, especially the automatics, could suffer from premature engine wear & failure, due to carbon build-up and insufficient oil injection programming. If concerned, I would get a compression test and catalytic converter evaluation. Doing a complete service including plugs, wires, coils, filters, MAF cleaning, etc. might be of some help.

Otherwise, how does the car run? Does it start OK cold & hot? Does it idle OK? Does the fuel consumption seem reasonable?

04RX8TX 10-19-2011 03:27 PM

At least yours does not get stuck at 3k rpm for 15 seconds before doing anything.
2004 auto. coils just came in going to see if that fixes my problem.

already cleaned maf and ssv valve, and removed cat

Ricky SE3P 10-19-2011 03:54 PM

the rain just stopped here about a hour ago. i have to go for a drive so ill record my 4 port 4 speed auto. i have factory catback with ap dual res midpipe and a k&n drop in filter (so i should be around the same)

Ricky SE3P 10-19-2011 06:11 PM

video one
video two (manual mode)
i think i didnt have my foot down all the way for video two. hope this helps
(remember, i dont have a catalytic converter so i should get a little bit more power, but my coils have 16k miles on them, my plugs have 22k miles on them, and wires have all 44k on them, which should bring me back down from the cat-less gain which already isnt much)

ShinkaEvo 10-19-2011 07:20 PM

OP, just by watching ur video, it does look slow already, without even comparing to other videos.
Regular check on plugs, coils, and wires. And plus your cat and MAF.
See if things gets better after all those.

Red_lineRX-8 10-19-2011 08:33 PM

hey guys thanks for all the help! i plan to do a cat delete this week, and also do plugs and wires in the next day or so. I picked up some NGK goodies yesterday. i know i should get coil packs they are just sooo damn expensive!

As for start ups it does take a little bit to start. some times after its been drivin for a bit and i shut it off and restart it with in 20 minutes and the engine is still hot it might take 2 or 3 times to actually start it. today it was pretty cold out and when i started it this morning it started the first time maybe too 4 or 5 seconds and then ran and made a weird noise like the motor really didnt liek the cold start.

sorry for all these questions we just got this car and trying to decide if we are gonna sell it and get another one or keep it.

Ricky SE3P 10-19-2011 08:39 PM

doesnt hurt to get compression checked and get the engine replaced under warranty if its below the minimum established by mazda.

Red_lineRX-8 10-19-2011 08:49 PM

its an 04 with 67k miles im pretty sure no warranty

Red_lineRX-8 10-19-2011 08:51 PM

i also noticed you CEL was on... is that from the rain? mine flashed at me a few times under WOT in the rain then stayed on.

check the inside of your driver door for the manufactuing date. our engine core warranty was extended to 8yr/100k mi. if you are within that you have warranty.

my CEL is on because i have a midpipe, so my rear o2 sensor is saying that my catalytic is below threshold. its obviously fine though because i know its because i have no cat :yesnod:
if yours flashed its because you had a misfire. that means its time to change coils (wires and plugs are also factor and should be changed). it then stayed on to let you know there was a stored code (your misfire).

RX8Soldier 10-19-2011 09:32 PM

OP, there is a lot of info that you are asking about. I know that I posted some links for you to read in one of your other threads. I suggest you read through those, as they explain a LOT about what you're asking about.
Warranty
typical/ common issues and diagnoses
etc

Red_lineRX-8 10-19-2011 09:43 PM

yeah i did know about the misfire... but it came on later on while driving i just wasnt sure if these were picky rainy weather cars like my SS cobalt. i have been reading those threads trying to catch up my knowledge on these things... ive read pages lol. they do help aalot.

If you do not know the replacement history or condition of your coils, you should not postpone this. In addition to running quality, performance and fuel mileage, bad coils can also cause internal engine damage.

And, the aren't THAT expensive:

RX8Soldier 10-20-2011 01:35 PM

^Before that, I'd suggest you actually TEST the coils to find out if they're good or not
https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-testing-all-rx-8-coils-gm-ls2-yukon-coils-sparkplug-wires-222641/

If they are, then replace them. Else, you're gonna have engine misfires again, rather quickly...

Red_lineRX-8 10-20-2011 06:35 PM

Ok so today put the car up on the lift and changed my plugs and wire with NGK parts. i also removed the cat and piped it thru and just remounted the o2 sensor in the new pipe. car sounds and idles much better.

so i took it for a speed run and she acceled much better.. i think there is still room for imporvment. but at about 5500 rpms in second gear it started to spit and misfire under WOT... so now its coil pack replacement time lol

yeah, probably. lol once you do, you'll notice a big difference. enjoy the car

Red_lineRX-8 10-20-2011 08:27 PM

ok so today i put the new plugs, wires and did a cat delete. wanted to hold out on the coil packs to see if the wires, plugs and cat delete was enogh... it was alot faster and sounds way better. BUT it stil spits and misfires at WOT 5500 RPMs so i guess i need coil packs now.

got pics hold on

cfm251 10-20-2011 11:30 PM

thats not too bad...its like a 10 sec 0-60? What did seem a bit off is that the needle starts to fly at around 4k in 1st...and it didnt look like that was the case in your video. Either way check the usual cat, coils, plugs, maf sensor.
