AT to MT or Sport Brakes
I've picked up another Rx-8, a AT that will be converted, to build into a track only car and have some questions about the smaller AT brakes.
What are the specifc differencecs in the SPORT vs. Non Sport brakes? Is it disc diameter only? Are there caliper, master cylinder or prop valve differences? I want to swap this car to the Sport brakes all around and need to know which parts I'll need to pick up. Thanks, Michael |
Just because it is an AT does not mean it has smaller brakes. AT's can have the Sport brakes. The search function works wonders, use it.

Well posting your RX-8's trim level would help then. Using ABS? If you have a base then you don't have traction control I would guess so then cross referencing part numbers would tell you what you want to know. I seem to recall the hubs are different too but only searching would confirm or deny that.

IF it was a sport model of the AT then it came with the bigger diameter rotors because it could be fit with the bigger 18 in rims that also came with the model as well as a lsd. The rear rotors were the same size regardless of the Sport or standard. Everything else was the same besides some little gimmicks from what i read on an old brochure if you want me to send you the link just let me know.

Also a AT Grand touring had the bigger wheels and bigger brakes. With LSD.

The car is a 2004 base model. It currently has the factory 16" wheels on it.
I'm most curious if the calipers and master cylinder are the same or not. |
I am pretty sure the calipers are much bigger on a Sport suspension equipped car and the part numbers are different from various supplier for the non sport suspension calipers. But I have not seen a base auto in person for a very long time. PM ash8, he will be able to tell you for sure and you can put this to rest.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've sent him an email. More searching at parts stores online catalogs today have not helped. I'm still getting part numbers that cross reference both cars (probably SPORT cars) as well as numbers that don't cross over on some sites but do on others.

If it comes down to it you can just measure the calipers and I can walk outside and measure mine or I can call up a friend who has a base

Just because it is an AT does not mean it has small braking system. AT's can have the Game braking system. The look for operate performs amazing things, use it.

If he has 16" wheels, he has the base/AT brakes. Those wheels won't fit over the larger brakes.
