Modification (AT trans)

Hey everyone i'm not new to this but i just registered to this rx8 club. i like it so far. I was wondering on peoples opinion on modifications to my 8. Not to expensive but gain hp. let me know please. Thanks!!!!!!

lilring 01-03-2009 11:33 PM

hey man, Almost everything you want to do to your 8 for cheap will get you some power but when is comes to modding nothing is really cheap.. To get a lot of power out of it will cost a lot of money. The only way to get a lot of power out of our cars is FI.

dhan 01-03-2009 11:49 PM

For my first mod i went for the greddy SP2 and Agency power midpipe setup. Im planning on getting my cobb acessport so i can reline higher which is more power. Headers,pulleys, lots of option!

paulmasoner 01-04-2009 01:07 AM

setting your redline higher wont make more power on its own. the cars power curve starts to fall somewhere between 8500-9000rpms in stock trim iirc. and around 7500rpm in most boosted applications....

you can make more power while raising the redline, but it will require more complicated work than just raising the redline with a flash tune.

Oh wow i did not know that. I was planning on getting the Acess Port just so i can shift at around 9000 rpm but if it does not increase the power at higher rpms then i should not get it.

paulmasoner 01-04-2009 02:38 AM

you should get it, for a slew of other reasons.

Oiling, cooling, MPG, and in combination with some of the other popular bolt ons you can get a few extra horses out of it - just dont expect miracles.

i forgot the AT is limited at like 7500 or something right? so increasing the redline to 9000 may give you a bit more power, im not sure. either way i know power starts to drop off well before 9000 so no sense in ever going beyond that w.o significant other mods.

FI (turbo) is not the only means of gaining more power on an auto.

N2O, exhaust, and a good EMS like the AP will help and still fall well under the cost of a turbo.

pimpinjin 01-04-2009 01:04 PM

intake,exhaust,pulley,headers,midpipe,cobb,light weight wheels....lol

rx8mazda04 01-04-2009 01:16 PM

What is FI??? Is it fuel injection???? THANKS

rx8mazda04 01-04-2009 01:19 PM

Also sorry for asking all these questions??? But what is AP and EMS. Also the access port, what does that really do and what is the recommendation for all these's goodies. THANKS SO MUCH FELLAS

ShellDude 01-04-2009 01:19 PM

FI = forced induction (turbo)
AP = AccessPort
EMS = Engine Management System

As far as learning more about the AP, check out the MazdaManiac AP threads. If you buy one, I highly recommend going through him.

FI is more than just a turbo... FI stands for Forced Induction such as Turbo, SuperCharger, and Nitrous

Thanks for the info everyone. THANKS

accessport works miracles on the auto tragics.

although it sets you back 7 bills.

Semiazas 01-05-2009 11:09 AM

Before you go forced induction. I have a Borla Exhaust on mine and its doing not much.
Start with the complete exhaust system (headers,catback, etc..) then you can move on and get other various parts for some small HP gains (Intake, Ignition, Stickers..etc..) the Best HP gain would be a FI system such as the Petit Supercharger kit or the Greddy Turbo kit..

The MT 8's also have more power..:icon_no2:

False.

There are two ways to get better performance out of your 8 from a speed perspective. You can either increase to power output of the engine or you can reduce the weight of the car.

For increasing power I would suggest starting with a 3" intake and exhaust. They are low cost in comparison to most of the other mods and are not too tough to install. A CAI (Cold Air Intake) is best but a bit more work to install as you have to remove the front bumper to put it in.

After a CAI and Exhauts I would look at a high flow midpipe. And maybe the AP (Cobb Access Port - talk to MazdaManiac). Better coils will help (talk to Charles R. Hill from BHR) as well.

The basic goal of engine performance is to move more air through the engine. As MM has said many times, horsepower is generated by more air moving though the engine. FI (Turbo, SC, Nitros) just pushes more air (and fuel) through the engine making more HP.

For reducing weight, look at simple things like lighter rims, custome seats, carbon fiber body parts (although the CF hoods tend to weigh just as much I think), etc. Every 10 pounds you loose on the car weight is about equivalent to adding 1 HP.

Does this mean if I wasnt driving my car, it would be equivelant to 26 extra hp? :uhh:

Auto 8, have to buy accessport if....

If you change the intake/exhaust/ignition/ and midpipe, you will need to do some tuning of your 8... So plan on doing at the same time... Cause once you do all these mods at the same time, you will need to tune... Take from experience...
Happy mods.... Brannon

rx8mazda04 01-06-2009 11:55 AM

hey why would I have to tune it once I do the intake/ exhaust/ignition. Why would I have to get it tuned..!???? Tag sosent make no sense, unless the parts will effect certain things. Please let me know what everyone thinks. Thanks

Renesis07 01-06-2009 01:21 PM

Mine is untuned, and mine is okay.

rx82hate 01-06-2009 02:58 PM

Ok, don't "have to" I should say, you will want to... :)

lilring 01-06-2009 06:33 PM

You will get more out of it when you have your 8 tuned. What Im doing so I dont have to retune is get all or most of the parts on and then tune. Im doing the Full exhaust (header, midpipe and cat back), Pulleys, Full intake, and Nitrous. After all that I will get a lot more power out of it.

dhan 01-06-2009 06:40 PM

How much are tunes usually? from people who knows rotary? theres one in bay area named rotary extreme and so far i have an exhaust+midpipe but i do not know if i should get a tune now or later for more hp
