Getting ready for dyno day

This Thread is about the next stage of my RX8 and to get opinions from my fellow 8 owners . This post will be updated should there be any changes.

RX8: 2004 AT Greddy Turbo (See full modifications here)

Reason:
1. Poor performance in Fuel Injectors and Fuel Pump during the DYNO tune.
2. Cooling was horrible due to 1 Oil Cooler and lack of CAI.
3. Jeff only got it to get to 183 HP, 172 TRQ)

Fixes:
1. Additional oil cooler
2. Better radiator
3. Upgrade fuel pump
4. Upgrade fuel injectors

Current Status:

8-31-2010 I had KDR install a heat wrap/shield under RP Mid Pipe do to excess heat. During the DYNO water temperatures were reading almost 226+ for one pull and returning home I found out my transmission wires were starting to melt.

Note: KDR, or KD Rotary Performance is now called Speed 1.

Engine Bay Currently:

Current Add-Ons Coming:
- Razor ViS Carbon Fiber Hood

Engine Option 1 – Better (Cheap)
1. Koyo Cooling Radiator $160
2. Walbro Performance Fuel Pump $100
3. Oil Cooler, Possibly OEM else another brand.
4. Upgraded Fuel Injectors ??? Any thoughts of which one to add to a 4 Port AT??

Engine Option 2 – Besterest (Costly)
BHR Ignition System $480
BHR Fuel Pump $460
BHR Radiator $660
AEM CAI
Upgraded Fuel Injectors (See Option 1)
Battery Relocated to Trunk
Oil Catch Can moved next to window washer fluid.
Intercooler mounted where battery

Before you break the bank how about a little more time spent on diagnoses ...
Are you sure the install is 100% ?
What boost did you see at whp peak ?
How do you know you had poor performance from pump and injectors ?
The stock pump will handle almost double the whp output you made - unless the AT has a different pump to the MT ?

What size are the stock injectors on an AT ? 280/480 would take you to 200whp ish. so I don't think your injectors were a limiting factor.

Still say add another water rad where the 2nd oil cooler would go .

Posting up your dyno would help ...

markryan22 09-06-2010 02:14 PM

Pretty sure about the injectors, the pump might just be added to help the load. When Jeff was tuning 183HP/172TOR was the max he could get out of it. He said about the stock injectors could be off by 15% and since it's a 4 port, just one not going to par would hurt.

Cooling on the other hand my water temps have been hitting any where from 200-236, which on the dyno started melting the plastic harnesses that connect to the transmission.... not good.

gregs 09-06-2010 02:38 PM

insulate/wrap the transmission lines, is that RP midpipe equipped with a cat? I would steer away from the koyo radiator there isn't too much positive feedback on that radiator..either add a secondary radiator like brettus mentioned or look into the BHR radiator...what coolant water mixture are you running?

ronx8 09-06-2010 02:48 PM

Remember that the OEM AT radiator comes doubled with a tranny cooler.

The only aftermarket radiator with a tranny cooler is BHR.

.

OK -
*fit the pump
*upgrade the secondary injectors
*fit a 2nd water rad - as ronx8 mentioned the stock rad has to cool the tranny as well so a 2nd unobstructed one would be very effective. Just make sure it sees airflow at the dyno or you will be worse off than you are now.
*try again

My gut feeling is that you won't make any more power beacause there will be another issue that you have not found yet . But at least you have the capacity to go higher .

KDR did a heat sheild but that's a good point to wrap them. I should just wrap the pipe down. Yeah I've read some reviews that haven't done to much to keep the car cooler then stock...

Coolant water mix = none. I was thinking of trying a AEM Water / Methanol Injection Kit, just wish it wasn't $400.

I didn't think about the tranny cooler. Would be a huge plus.

I'll prob do the injectors and the pump day before the dyno run just incase. Rather have jeff there to tweak before I road test. Maybe I should change out spark plugs too since i have no clue if/when they were switched when the first motor blew.

Why don't you heat wrap the midpipe. I did and never have scorched my wires.
And my cabin floor/Drive shaft Tunnel is cooler afterward.

Here are my .02 worth.

1. The OEM fuel pump loves to ever heat and drop off in flow and pressure.
Replace it with a Walbro. Or like you have above replace the entire unit.

2. Fuel Injectors: Really have two options to choose.
a. Send the stockers to KG parts. Pay $80 or so buck to upflow the 480's to 8xx plus and have the 280's cleaned and flow matched.
b. OR replace the Secondaries with two 1000cc. I Recommend Injector Dynamics

3. upgrade the Single Oil cooler to a 19 row. Install an second H2O cooler where the second oil cooler would go.

4. BHR AT rad works great for shedding heat. Work better with the Mazmart T-Stat

5. Get rid of that POS Greedy HAI. I was seeing 197+ degree IAT's. That right there will eat your power.

6. The BHR Ign replacement is da shiznit. Really it is. I know the stock coils won't light off 14 month old gas.

Nope it's the same.

Not really but it starts getting close the 80% duty cycle.

I'm going to see about getting that done this week.

1. I'm order one of the Walbro's tomorrow if Dave can install it himself at his shop.

2. Injectors: Best bet would be the ones for the RX7 correct?

3. I seen some of those oil cooler ebay for like $65, curious if thats for crap one, or a viable option.

4. Pricey but I think it might be a good add-on, deff if I upgrade the turbo like your thread :evil_laug

5. I was going to get a AEM CAI, but curious if I could just build one myself.

6. I do have a Esmeril Racing RX-8 Ignition Upgrade, hopefully it's similar to the BHR

Definately you could - you just need a tube made up to suit the maf to the right dimensions - preferably one with a bend on the end to match the greddy pipe that goes to the turbo inlet , some couplers and a filter .
I don't even use screens ...

I'll have to try it out, i had a AEM CAI but sold it when I installed the turbo thinking the racing sponge would been better... and I was wrong lol

freaklinkmusic 09-10-2010 06:18 PM

what psi you running @ the manifold? if you're running about 6psi then those are almost the best numbers you'll see with that turbo with the 4port a/t. you gain maybe 7-10 hp with better cooling the the cai.

ShellDude 09-10-2010 09:36 PM

The only plus about the AEM kit itself is the MAF tube and the sock. Should be easy to source the sock.

Dave fabricated a couple pipes for me when he did my install and "fitted" an AEM CAI on. If he's comfortable replicating the mount for the MAF it'll probably be a little cheaper in the long run to have him do it. You end up with a couple left over pipes (and likely a little bit of cutting) with the AEM too.
