flywheel

Ok so let me start by saying I don't know much about cars so this might seem like a dumb question to some of you. Can you change the flywheel on an AT or is that only a MT option? Thanks

Tigster Oct 13, 2006 12:05 PM

yes you can change it. If you do be sure to check the muffler bearings and blinker fluid while you are under there.

if i recall correctly, dont quote me on this, but the RX8 AT is based off a flywheel type system..

Thanks for the info, I don't how to check that stuff, I would probably have the car taken somewhere and have someone install it. I don't have the slightest clue how to do it myself. Sometimes I wish I knew as much about cars as I do computer systems. That way I could do this stuff myself and not pay someone.

FYI...the counter weight used for the ACT Prolite is actually the counter weight from the AT.

Bust seriously, no worries - we all had to learn at some time. A great tool to gain more info on virtually anything is www.wikipedia.org

...which need to be maintained with Dot 8 fluid.

Got to love 6 port pukes don't we now.

the flywheel is only a M/T option. Any benefit to the A/T in this part of the drive train would be a diffrent torque converter.

I haven't been able to track one that fits in the 8 yet.

Tigster Oct 14, 2006 02:49 PM

I thought the blinker fluid and muffler bearings would have tipped him off.....

Well, some of 8's have been known to gather some "blinker fluid" in the rear lights...

09Factor Oct 14, 2006 11:10 PM

Also for us cursed A/T owners we need Hp in the midrange of the Rpm band.
This may help.

Jtthedude,
the flywheel is located behind the clutch disc and the clutch cover which is only found on manual transmissions.

Flywheel-----Locknut----Pilot bearing----oil seal----Clutch disc----Clutch Cover----Clutch Release Collar----Clutch Fork----Clutch release cylinder

In this order is the complete Clutch system that is located before the opening in the (found at the rear of the) manual transmission,
