The difference between AT and MT? engine-wise
why is it that the MT has 20 more hp and 1500 higher rpm???
that is the main reason im starting to hate my AT right now.... a trade is out of the question. what about a AT->MT conversion? possible? if so, how hard would it be and how much?? |
Anything is possible. But if you are thinking of Making your AT into MT you will need a MT ECU and tranny and the shift boot and if your rx8 is a 4port you will need the 6 port. It would be a lot easier to just trade it in for a MT
|
no for the conversion, and to save you from you the flame attack that is about to come, you need to search
|
yeah all of the get MT/autos suck are about to come...anywho talk to charles hill i think hes coming out with some sort of accesory for the zex kit where you dont have to drill anything to your intake and hopefully save your warranty and w/ nos i think you should be pretty close to a MT
|
or if you have the money, throw on the Pettit S/C like Phil
|
ok. so why does the MT have 20 more hp and 1500 higher rpm?
|
Fire in the HOLE!!!!
The Manual engine has a 6 port intake system. The Automatic engine has a four port intake system. Thus lower HP. in the AT. The decrease in engine RPM's are due to the AT not being able to turn the higher RPM's based on what Mazda says about the Automatic Transmission. Heating. If you want more power then buy a Manual trans car. If you have an AT car then Supercharge it or Turbo it. You are not going to swap engines and be under the amount of money you would spend on a Forced induction system for either car. |
:banghead:
|
the new AT's are now 6 port
|
But they are still limited to 7500 rpm due to the limits of the auto trans. Mainly the torque converter, I believe. Mazda doesn't believe it can handle 9000 rpms and last. There are people on here that have gotten rid of the rev limiter, used synthetic fluids, etc, but they are braver souls than I am :)
You are past your power peak anyway. At least with the 4-port motor. We peak at 7200 rpms, then it begins to drop off. I could see the higher redline being beneficial on a road course or something, where it might eliminate the need to shift as much. But we don't need to shift that much on a road course anyway. My one time to the track I was in 2nd and 3rd gear the entire time. Shift up to 3rd in the straightaway at redline, shift down to second going into the corner after you've dropped some rpms under braking. Just forgot to do that downshift a few times and had nothing coming out of the corner :) But with a quick tap of the button I was in the proper gear. |

The actual difference in acceleration is way more than you would think . It is only 20hp on papaer but on the road it feels more like a 50 hp difference . That is why a supercharged auto is only marginally faster than a NA manual .

I'm getting a sore a**

but doesn't acceleration have more to do with torque, in which both MT and AT are the same?
Brettus, too bad I can't race you to show what a s/c at can do. You are right paper does not tell the story. |

To be as nice as I am able to be to someone that who refuses to search the available information on this subject, you need to sell the car quickly as you will never be happy with it. You belong over in the general population with the AT bashers or better yet in a Honda forum. Sell quickly!!

I've tried searching but all i get is wrong posts/threads. btw phil, how much was everything for the s/c?
The turbo is a very good choice and there are several currently on the market for the AT and some are less expensive than the s/c. Talk to Charles R. Hill (Ray) (or PM him) or Mazda Maniac (Jeff) for the different choices there. There is also NO injection, again talk to Charles R. Hill for direction. There are several others that offer kits also but you need to go to their sites to inquire about pricing. |
yeah, i think i want the pettit s/c too. but 6500 is alot. better start saving my lunch money ;) when u say the x, you mean int-x right? what exactly is that phil? and what are the gain from pettit s/c?

Phil, seriously u are a great helper. Thank you so much for tht.
My understanding is the SC provide a consistant gain on the graph with the "queen bee" sound, while the turbo is a jump start type of boost in the straight road. With the blow off valve sound, I just fall in love for the 1st time. I am going for the inter-X 1st, then either SC / turbo. Can't wait until tht time. |
thanks phil, it's gonna be awhile before s/c. btw, is ur 8 ur daily driver?
