4 spd to 6 spd
I was wondering if anyone has done a swap for the 4 spd Auto (used '03-05) to the 6 spd auto ('06+)? I would do this jsut to have a greater selection of gear ratios and therefore better perfrmace. So the why is clear, but the how and the how much are the questions.
This is something I'd like to do down the road. I'm not sure where to start other then gathering ideas and price costs. Has anyone seen a 6 spd auto for sale? Heres what I think i'll need. If you can think of anything else, or think I may be able to use existing parts let me know. -6sdp auto tranny -ECU from a 6sdp auto car -steering colum for 6sdp paddles It should be easier then swapping to a manual. Any thoughts or ideas? And I don't care what Mr. Clarkson says they are not a stupid flappy paddle gear boxs! I think they're very usefull.:lol2: But i do agree with a lot else TopGear does. PS. I am the stig.:lol2: |

you'll also need the engine.

Engine
Trans ECU Gauge cluster (idk if the numbers go past 4 on the older models.., might just need a reprogram or maybe the ECU will fix it) The steering wheel and paddles shouldn't need to be changed... It would probably be pretty costly... you might be better off getting a 3 rotor if your looking for power |
not worth it. you should have bought a 6 port in the first place.
i think Tajahabo1 tried. |

That doesn't make sense. Care to elaborate on why I would need the engine?

If cost wasn't an object I'd put in a three rotor, or be driving an Enzo. Maybe down the road.
It would probably be pretty costly... you might be better off getting a 3 rotor if your looking for power I bought the '04 4spd auto because of cost, and wanted the paddle shifters. From what I understand the 4spd Auto and 6spd auto both produce around 212hp. But the 6 spd has two extra ports. Only the 6-speed manual "High Power" that produces more 228 -247. I might be wrong the facts are from Wikipedia. Are there any posts from Tajahabo1 attempts, I did a search but it said invalid user. |
I was using it as a reference... if your gonna spend that much money you might as well do a worthy upgrade.....
the 4 port autos have the 4spd trans and make 197hp the 6 port autos have the 6spd trans and make 212hp just adding the 6sp trans will not give you more hp... it might make the powerband different but it would not be worth doing unless you are getting a different motor here is taj's user page https://www.rx8club.com/members/tajabaho1-33221/ |
I know I won't gain any horsepower, thanks, lol. The powerband wouldn't change with the transmition. A 6spd closer ratio transmition would allow me to stay closer to peak of the power band, no matter what engine is used.
FYI, I was planning to turbo my existing engine, a three rotor would be great this might be something to plan for down the road. And Alcurd you're probably right the paddle shifters won't need to be changed they should just be switches. And the gague cluster I have no idea... you could be right. Thanks. I'll have to think about it more, and take a look for the parts. |
yea def something too look into... might be a good upgrade for all of us down the road... also pay attention to Nukes turbo thread... he shows us that there is light at the end of the tunnel lol
|
what? my turbo thread is chopped liver?
To swap in a 6 speed tranny the ECU and TCM communicate to each other. So for it to work right you would need to swap the motor to a 6 port, the ECU, wiring harness, the TCM, the tranny, the Gauge cluster, and all of the odds and ends of mount brackets and such. I looked into doing this and a turbo was way more cost effective, |
I thought this question was answered before, I was the one who first raised this question. Oh well...
It must remind myself is not worth it to do swap 4sp to 6sp. |
all the info it here.

I do know how you feel. I was really about to get my tranny swap done. But the thing is i have an 05 and it is 4 port engine. When i found out i needed the 6 port engine i was shocked it costed around 2000 dollars from dealers or places. Gluck if you decide to do it! i should of gotten a 06 -.- haha.

Wait... they make a 6speed AUTO? I thought they were all just 4speed.

I am just beginning to realize how many people do not read what has already been discussed. I think that there are at least 4 threads on changing from the 4 port a/t to a 6port a/t and why it is not economical.
For the reading challenged among you, the 4 port 4 speed when coupled with FI is just fine. The tranny is strong and with the added power from the FI you never will miss what you don't have. |

LMAO...... Ok, ok, now the thread can just die. I just wanted to say that.

I fail to see the advantages to the 6sp. With the 4, you make roughly the same power, but you are in gear for alot longer. I'd say spend that money on a turbo, you'd be MUCH happier.

I've been watching this forum for some years now and there are just so many ways to go about FI for the 8
