'04 AT Upgrade
one simple question. what should I get?
first someone tells me intake, then i hear the intake is useless for the A/T which intake is even compatible with the A/T? Exhaust. Yes Im saving for that. Always a + So exactly what for performance? any little things? and i mean A/T specific. or at least fully A/T compatible. and i dont mean tons of performance. little bits here and there i suppose. any help? and yes ive done my searching. hours to be exact. i have my choices, likes and dislikes... now just tell me yours. :sweatdrop |
straight pipe with the hks exhaust, screw the intake just get a K&N panel filter
|
well, one over the other go with a catless midpipe. I have an 04 at and I did a midpipe and the aem cold air intake, I am very happy with both, I am sure I didn't get much HP gain but it certainly makes my car sound like it got more horsepower. I think all of the intakes for rx8s work for ATs so you have your choice. Same goes for midpipes
|
mazda designed a badass intake for the RX8 bone dry stock. You don't need shiat intake wise except maybe a k&n filter and if you must remove a screen and sound baffle from the airbox.
You won't need to replace it until you go FI. Then something like a modified AEM will do wonders! Buy an access port. That's the your first best investment. Resonated midpipe and BHR yukon coils will give you best bang for your buck. I've got two dyno charts (granted not from the same dyno) that show a 15 HP increase pre and post midpipe/yukon install. |
cobb AP, midpipe, catback, cold air intake, BHR coils, fresh spark plugs, and some good tuning.

^what they said

Cobb Ap, BHR Coils, New plugs, K&N or a Green (brand?) drop in filter, Then new MM tune, Walbro fuel pump, Hi flo or no CAT, straighter cat back, and HPDE. The 8 alreayd has a good designed CAI system. The most restrictive part of it are the sound baffles and the air filter in the air box. |
thank you guys. all feedback appreciated.
im going with plugs, wires, and coils + tires first. will see about everything else. might do a little body stuff here and there before anything under the hood. H.I.D's, clear corners, strakes, etc. |
If you are an 04, you might like some of the stuff in the first $100 thread. The cooling work may be of less interest, but the electrical, especially the grounding, is important. The MAF clean too, it can be a real eye opener. Also, even if AT has fewer cooling issues than MT, a cool engine is a happy engine.

Great news.
Let me know if you run into any problems. Thanks for the feedback. Mike |
to Shell Dude: BHR Yukon coils? i dont see them. ?
and 04 green... can u make me a little revised version just for the A/T? lol [ex. No VFAD] |
What are you doing with the car? Street only, track days, etc?
|
daily driver / street only.
|
go for Feed or knight sports 4.777 final drive for better response and acceleration.
great for street drive. downside of it your max high speed max decrease a little. or better still get re-amemiya 5.1 final drive. u get great acceleration but u got shit high speed. xD |
What is your budget? That will determine what kind of recommendations can be made?

My experience with RB intake on 04 Automatic
I'v had a 04 auto for six years now. First thing I did was get and RB intake, Ram Air Scoop and Borla exhaust. I loved these modifications because originally my stock car sounded like a bumble bee and afterwards it growled like a race car. A couple of days ago I removed the RB intake and put on the stock intake to pass my first smog inspection. In the last few days I have been driving around with the stock intake I can honestly say that I don't notice the difference. Performance and sound seem the same due to the Borla exhaust and the ram air scoop. Now that I have to do smog inspections every other year I think I'm going to leave the stock intake on. It's just easier to replace a stock air filter. I always struggled removing the K&N cone filter from the cramped engine compartment and cleaning it seemed more hassle than it was worth. Anyway this is just my experience, everyone's different. Good Luck.
