twin F/I

i think it would be intereseting if the rx8 had twin sequential turbos like the rx7.....? has anyone else had this thought?

Jedi54 10-27-2008 03:46 PM

many people have thought of it but in reality it does not make much sense. Though the 3rd Gen's did offer a TT FI system, many owners chose to take out the TT's and go with one larger snail for better performance.

I believe same would be true with an 8.

nvrfalter 10-27-2008 04:17 PM

what kinda numbers could you expect with those lil baby turbs

newguy 10-27-2008 04:23 PM

nice work looks sick

dozer 10-27-2008 04:31 PM

yet again lol

Sequential turbos sound like a great idea in theory, but in practice from what I understand are a huge pain in the ass. Most people modifying the Rx7 as mentioned above ditched the twin-sequential setup for a single big turbo. Getting the changeover from the early turbo to the second one is a pain and reliability suffers. Considering reliability is not something that comes in large amounts with FI rotary engines its probably not a good idea to do anything making them less so.

exhaust flow from a rotary far exceeds the same displacement piston.

3071R can do 400 hp and will spool up under 3,000 rpm. So unless you want to go much higher than 400, I don't see the point besides making your vehicle prone to having issues by complicating the FI setup.

Let's go twin 3071R :aroused:

mysql 10-27-2008 06:46 PM

twin is old school. the new thing is quad turbos.

simplyphp 10-27-2008 06:50 PM

quad turbo on a quad rotor rotary.

kersh4w 10-27-2008 07:01 PM

1 turbo per rotor!

the problem with the renesis is that it shares one of exhaust ports between the rotors.

You guys are hilarious. :)

Title says twin fi, maybe he means a supercharged turbo setup

Been discussed, exoticspeed is supposedly devoping a setup (or was in the past) - search.

tiltmode43 10-27-2008 07:54 PM

nvm, looks like that blue car may indeed be eoticspeed's lol

Charles R. Hill 10-28-2008 09:42 AM

So....... pretty much what we have happening here is that turbo design and manufacturing progresses and improves and those who don't know/understand this seem to want to reach back in the dustbin of automotive history and apply old technologies/lines of thought to today's cars.

Two turbos? Simply a showcase vehicle.

Renesis07 10-28-2008 09:46 AM

What about if you have a single turbo with a turbonator? That would be twin FI..

Charles R. Hill 10-28-2008 10:18 AM

Technically, that is called "compound supercharging".

Jedi54 10-28-2008 11:32 AM

you REALLY wanna be different?? Go for Twin Pettit Superchargers!!
Yeah, just imagine the possibilities! It's mind bottling. ;)

actually there is such a thing...saw it at formula D at the little car show that goes on...they had a bimmer with a supercharger and a turbo...supercharger kicks in at 1k rpm and goes till about 3k then the turbo kicks in and handles the rest...no worries for boost lag
