rx8 swap

Hey guys i just got a 04 with a blown engine. I wanted to add a turbo to it when i do the rebuild but, reliability is my concern. My mechanic told me he wouldn't do it for me lol. He said he doesn't do them because 9 out of 10 don't last long. And to tell you the truth i don't feel like putting money into this engine.

So I am more incline to do a turbo 2 swap or 13b rew. stand alone computer of course. The shop quote me at about 7000 for the swap of a stock engine. no upgrades.

So my question is how much did you waste on this type of swap if you did it? Is 7000 enough or I'll need more money to have it done.

I will be buying everything next month.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please don't ask me why a t2 or rew this is what i want to do, respect it.

Did a search and didn't find total costs for a swap. And this is my particular situation. I will do a build thread when i start getting everything and post total costs of the swap so others have an idea.

I'm planning a REW swap right atm and IT WILL NOT BE A WASTE

oh to answer your question, you'll need 15grand minimum

and RE and REW swaps are the cheapest

unless you go down the Isuzu V6 route.............

Keep searching I believe there is a shop in nz that makes a conversion kit.

shr3da 01-10-2013 01:08 AM

Wow that's cheap!

fuztupnz 01-10-2013 05:51 AM

never been done before in the US. You'll be the first.

Good luck and let us know if you got it all done for $7k.

airman90 01-10-2013 06:20 AM

15k is a lot for me at the moment. The shop said that it could be done with 7k unless i want to do major upgrades. I found this engine mount for thr swap

airman90 01-10-2013 06:27 AM

Any suggestions on parts to help with this swap. To make it easier

shr3da 01-10-2013 06:27 AM

You need more than an engine mount and or under brace bracket to do an engine swap.

if 7k is all you can afford then you can forget about it.

A) spamming posts in your thread isn't going to get you very much good will around here

B) it isn't going to get any further posting up a link to RX8Performance, a vendor that has arguably the worst reputation of any vendor, and has been banned from the forum 3 times (each additional was a re-name of the company trying to get back in, also known as Mazsport and one other name inbetween i forget)

C) There are actually more than a small handful of REW swaps into RX-8s, and they usually turn out pretty good. The short end of the price stick for someone else to do it hovers around $12,000. Try Googling: site:rx8club.com REW swap for some reading BEFORE you make another post in this thread. Lots of information there, you just have to read it. If you aren't willing to read that information, we have to assume you won't read what we tell you here either.

Your funds are insufficient, why even talk about the swap?

Because sometimes what we want and what we can afford are two different things.

Yup, that situation is called waste of time... and can easily be done in private without wasting other people's time.

airman90 01-10-2013 07:38 AM

I can afford the 7k for sure. And more once i get my tax return. The 7k number was given to me by the mechanic i didnt invent it.

airman90 01-10-2013 07:42 AM

I am doing this swap even if i have to spend 5 years to save $100 for a screw. Stop putting people down. This community and all communities are here to help each other share your knowledge to those who dont know it all. And if you think is a waste of time then dont waste yours commenting on this thread

That actually depends on the view you have of THE community. A pre-Hellenistic greek like Aristoteles or Plato would beg to disagree. It's the member that has to follow the community's welfare and follow its rules. So, according to them, we're helping the community by ridding it of wasted space.
Move on to Machiavelli and you'll have another view, then comes Thomas More, Rousseau etc.

Be open minded, study some philosophy!

Could you please use quotes when you are replying? It's hard to tell who you are referring to without them. And if you use the multi-quote button you won't have to spam your own thread...

THEN YOU SHOULD NOT BELIEVE HIM.

Seriously.

Shop around. When it comes to custom complicated car modifications, taking the cheapest option will mean that you are going to pay far far far more, because the cheap guy won't be able to finish, or if he does "finish" there will be stuff jacked up. Either way, you will then have to pay someone else that is better to pull it all apart and re-do it properly, who you could have just paid less to in the first place, although still more than the first guy charged you.

Have you stopped to consider that what you are getting IS helping you? If you continue on the path that you seem determined to follow, you will probably end up with a busted car with a partial swap, $10,000+ in charges, and trying to hunt for someone who can ACTUALLY do it right. We are not trying to stop you from doing the swap, we are trying to stop you from taking the wrong road toward your goal. The one you are on has a big "bridge out ahead" sign that you are ignoring.

Mr_Pieper 01-10-2013 07:47 AM

The problem is that the information is already on the site. You haven't properly searched for it. There are many build threads around with this exact swap. There are many knowledgeable people telling you $7k is low. Your lack of research is why people are harassing you. This is a popular and one of the more common swaps.

shr3da 01-10-2013 07:57 AM

If you can't even listen to this basic advice then how do you plan moving forword.

There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things. For the reformer has enemies in all those who profit by the old order, and only lukewarm defenders in all those who would profit by the new order, this lukewarmness arising partly from fear of their adversaries … and partly from the incredulity of mankind, who do not truly believe in anything new until they have had actual experience of it.

-- Machiavelli

Yep, i love that book. I find that most of its content are correct. Adding the Discourses on the First Ten Books of Titus Livy to the mix also helps.

Taking ethics out of the equation wasn't an easy thing to do back then. He was at the same time a millenium behind his age and nearly 3 centuries ahead.

If you do go ahead with their kit, be aware we are right hand drive here in NZ and most of the cars on our roads are JDM models

i'm not sure if that matters but i'm just warning you
