RX8 with 20# of boost

:( Unfortunately, I have recently tested my RX8 with what I guess to be at least 20 lbs of boost. The manual boost gauge was defective, showing 5# of boost, which read as 12+ # on the GReddy E01. I did see a spike on the manual gauge up to 10#, which I guess was probably at least 20#.

Sadly, I had previously told my installer that I suspected a bad boost gauge, and he said he checked it & confirmed that it was OK. Well, he was wrong.

It really wasn't my intent for my poor Renesis to be a crash test dummy for massive boost, but that's how it's worked out.

So far, the car still runs, but all bets are off on how long or how well.

Like I said before "your mechanic screwed ya". :(
Well at least you know what detonation sounds like now. Were you in the 20psi boost for only a few seconds? You may want to consider a compression test ($90 from the dealership.).

Moostafa29 08-10-2005 09:43 PM

Geez, it seems like ProStreet Motorsports really screwed up that installation. I hope you get it all taken care of soon, and they fix all the problems without hesitation.

Kel Rx8 08-10-2005 10:05 PM

very bad mechanic to not catch that
hope everything holds up, at least have them rebuild the turbo housing
for your pain and suffering
but real question is how did the car feel Im sure u heard the car ready to detonate at least once. at least u caught it before a cold winter morning boost spike :)

High Revving 08-10-2005 10:07 PM

lol your lucky ur big boost wasnt a big boom yea u should get a compression test id 2nd that

So far, they're trying to push everything back on me, although I do have some documentation that proves the contrary. I just hope this doesn't get really nasty.

The guy that handled my install has a reputation for being top-notch, which is why this comes as a big surprise.

I'll let everyone know how this plays out. I just heard from them that they've scheduled 2 more RX8 GReddy installs, so hopefully those will turn out better than mine has so far.

This wouldn't have happened if (a) I hadn't trusted the faulty boost gauge and (b) hadn't followed their incorrect instructions on how to connect my wastegate & boost source to the boost controller.

Jeez-Louise, I wish I could have installed this myself. It isn't all that hard, but it takes a lift, good tools, and some help, none of which were available.

Sigma 08-10-2005 10:42 PM

Is the GReddy turbo even capable of 20#? I'm thinking that it's not, even on a momentary spike.

max5roadster 08-10-2005 10:52 PM

Does it really matter after 10psi? It still spiked at least 2X the intended 5psi... 15-20psi, the point is kinda moot at that level. A compression test would be a good idea.

zoomzoom_8 08-11-2005 01:07 AM

the question is how did it feel, weak because not enough fuel?

rkostolni 08-11-2005 07:08 AM

you definitly don't need a lift to install this kit. There's several people on here, including myself that installed the kit with the car on jackstands. I don't think it was a problem at all.

MadDog 08-11-2005 07:51 AM

Yep. I plan on doing it on jackstands over the next week or so.

As far as the need for a compression test, I think if you didn't blow your engine right away, then there is probably nothing to worry about. The seals aren't going to slowly blow. They'll either do it or they won't. Your engine is fine and I wouldn't worry about it.

Hybrid-RX8 08-11-2005 11:07 AM

YES you should check your compression...... it should be around 90-110 lbs...90 obviously being borderline bad....

You need to know..ESPECIALLY if your boosting...and or plan on increasing boost ...that the engine is in good health to handle it..or you could just magically see a big BOOM on the dyno or street one day.

zoomzoom_8 08-11-2005 11:14 AM

yea, i did mine with floor jack and jackstands. Took a while, around three days but i am super super slow, never did anything like that before so I took my time, all in all not a bad job and when something goes wrong I understand what has changed on my 8, ie., knows how the car works now

guitarjunkie28 08-11-2005 02:26 PM

why bother with the compression check? it's a side port, remember. if the motor blew, it would be unmistakable!

Hybrid-RX8 08-11-2005 02:35 PM

I'm not saying compression test it to see if it blew.. I'm saying compression test it so you know what your dealing with if you want to keep doing power adders...

...speaking of which, how much would a new Renesis set me back? I guess I would do a street port while I was at it...

Yeah, MazParts sells them for about 2300-2500 or so.

Broke_Apex_Seal 08-13-2005 06:31 PM

I got a mazda reman from rosenthal mazda in arlington Va for $2385 plus sales tax.

Sapphonica 08-14-2005 01:31 AM

Now I'm feeling better. Thanks. If I'm dumb enough to blow my engine, I will pull it and drop it back in myself as penance, so no R & R cost other than maybe having to rent a lift and some tools.
