Returning to Nurburgring---Will my turbo Renesis last ?
 

So I've thinking about making my return back to the 'Ring for one last run before I leave Germany. Last time I went I was NA and almost got booted off the track for my TurboXS exhaust being F1-car loud. (those with TurboXS exhaust should know what I'm talking about)

Since then I am fully turboed and tuned... running 11-13 psi. Still, once you blow a motor once it forever is in the back of your mind once you're in boost. Not sure how others fair racing their turbo RX8's---Will my turbo Renesis withstand 10+ minutes of the green hell ?

Cant offer any help in regards to motor longevity, But i will certainly toss in some jealousy that 'ya can run the ring!!

But I would appreciate some feedback from those who have tracked their turbo RX8s!

Mine wasn't happy. Went REW and am working out some bugs and hope to be good for 2014

Unless you have gone thru some extraordinary measures for heat management

Tuning....lack of direct control of fueling caused by stock ECU tuning opions at the time

What would be considered a safe psi ? I do have a boost controller that I need to hook up, that I don't look forward to playing with (Profec II).

IMO anything under 6 psi.

Technically the engine should handle any boost that brings the MAP to 1 atmosphere (14.7psi)

No, if you gun it, it's done. But it's track, why wouldn't you wanna gun it?

No it won't last... 5-7 psi max for constant WOT runs

I would be very curious exactly what happens to be honest, also I am not sure how much FI comes into play but consider the environment to, its not exactly 90 degrees days we are talking about either. I would think with an upgraded cooling system setup you should be fine.

12 mins is not that long of a duration, if a boosted 8 can't survive 12 mins under hard load, then my faith in this car is going to suffer dramatically.

Point in case, as long as you addressed your cooling system appropriately and you have a very solid tune I can't for see any complications

I don't think the temperature is the main concern here.
I would be concerning about the compression itself (blown apex seal/motor), NA renesis already got much higher compression compare to other rotary, rensis wasn't designed for turbo from beginning. (although Mazda did have low compression rotor for the renesis...) On top of the compression add boost and under high load....you get the picture.

If i'm OP i wouldn't try, but if OP likes fun and have few grands lying around to backup, why not? At the end, we could be wrong.

Your turbo'ing a car/engine that isn't meant to be turbo'd. That's why it won't last. Some of y'all don't get it. Truth hurts but if you can't beat on a turbo like you can NA then its a waste of time and money.

You can if you support everything properly. Problem is most people only focus on FI and don't build everything else to support the platform and fail. Then they blame the engine for not being a good platform when they did nothing to ensure the system could handle the power.

11-13 PSI on a good tune will have him around 330WHP, with enough structural support their is no reason why it should fail. If he blows a seal then thats on his tune and most likely a ping, FI 8's don't blow seals just because of boost, its because something else in the system happened to cause it to fail.

Ive been on a few hard extended back road runs and the car has handled it great. I honestly think it would last from an engine build standpoint. Really, I am more concerned with a coupler popping off or a vacuum line busting because that track is just so damn rough on your car. It is not like in the video games, it has crazy bumps and elevation changes and is downright scary.... especially when you hear the engines of these exotics blowing past you like nothing. I wouldnt be at WOT the whole time like you would think.

As far as cooling, it is like 35 degree weather here in Germany so that would help on out with the heat. I am upgraded with porting and rotary aviation apex seals so i have a little more buffer. Still, no matter how great my car is running now... I still remember the day I blew my first engine.

I have done several track days over the last 2 years on my 10 year old car with original engine. Heat management is the only issue on hot days 30 degrees celcius is an issue however on cooler days you should be ok. I did loose a vacuum pipe on the track once causing the car to run lean.

Can't imagine its that hot this time of year.

35f it's about to snow here in Germany! I have had a vacuum line pop off my wastegate and watched the boost shoot up... Its this type of stuff I'm afraid of the most.
