ported throttle body

Does anyone have one of these? I am running the stage 3 kit from mazpsport. I feel the difference on the take off. Makes a big difference! Good buying guys!

So from what it sounds like you send them your Thorttle Body and they port/polish it then send it back?
Rates vary normally from $150 to $250 depending upon the throttle body.
So suay can you post a pic of what yours looks like or about how much they charged you?
Thanks!

I don't understand how polishing the throttle body helps anything.

rotarygod 01-26-2009 08:40 AM

Brian may be a friend of mine but a polished tb on an RX-8 will do absolutely nothing. His statement is actually based on an RX-7 throttlebody which leaves a lot to be desired.

Red Devil 01-26-2009 08:44 AM

I'd like to see some flow bench figures before and after.

rotarygod 01-26-2009 09:05 AM

I have an RX-8 tb just lying around but sadly my flowbench went the way of the dodo a cuople of years ago. I'm willing to bet you'll see absolultely no difference. On the RX-7 tb's you do see a flow difference but the tb isn't the most restrictive part of the induction system so it's benefit is really small if there is any at all.

Fred you're right, but I'm not just polishing it. I'm actually cutting it and porting it then polishing it.

Hurry Up Man!

When I get around to the rebuild of my renny, I think some porting and polishing will be looked at.

Your professional opinion would be appreciated. Before and after Dyno or maf readings would be a great way to show any improvement.

Thoughts on weither this will help a NA engine or FI only.

Scott, that's exactly what I plan to do plus offer my subjective opinion on any driveability changes I perceive.

As for the accuracy of my "butt-dyno" ask Apocalypse31 about last weekend's dyno meet in SoCal. I am that good.;)

Figured, not sure why I even mentioned it. :)

04RX8man 01-26-2009 04:58 PM

I once heard that polishing make less resistance and lets the air move easier with less friction so less heat and more air etc etc.....but i don't think it would b much of a difference.....

mysql 01-26-2009 05:00 PM

har har.

That's why I inject 2 stroke oil into my intake manifold, so the air moves through smoother with more lubrication!

alz0rz 01-26-2009 05:06 PM

it's all about the lube.

04RX8man 01-26-2009 05:07 PM

^haha yeah lube in the manifold and premix at the same time!!!! haha no more mixing with gas right?

Brian, I'm sending you a PM.
Thanks,

There is also a contrary concept called "boundary layer effect".

you referring to a layer of ever so slightly more turbulent air along the inner piping wall that creates a thermal barrier of sorts?

DOMINION 01-27-2009 11:56 PM

I'm buying a TB and will be shipping as soon as I get the address. I'll let you guys know what happens next

seems pricey for someone to polish metal... isn't this something you could do yourself for less then half the price?

DOMINION 01-28-2009 04:02 AM

^I would not know how to do it. I mean yea I can try and find or read up about how to do it online but if this guy got this down pat then he must be onto something. Only time will tell.
But then again there a LOT of things people are selling on this web site that dont work and are a lot more than this.
I think I'm going to look around Vegas and find a shop that can do it if the turn around time is to long that would be my other option.

Even though it may appear like that at first blush, I'm not just polishing the metal. Believe it or not, I'm actually spending a good chunk of time on this. I'm cutting (the term I use for harsh grinding) the metal, doing some re-shaping, then finish work with polishing at the very end. Granted, since the body is only so big, I'm not taking loads of metal out. The idea on this is to skinny up the boundary layer on it, taper the input edge, remove the transition "dent" above the throttle butterfly, and slightly widen its inner diameter. The positive effects are snappier throttle, better low and midrange, and more "ferocious" boost thresshold (the RPM time it takes to hit target boost is much more quicker and aggressive). Take a peek at the photo attached for a comparison.

I am still trying to feel the 8 market out on this. I've not done too many of these as of yet but from the ones I've done it's shown a marked improvement in the performance of the car. I expect it to be more substantive on a turbo setup and I'd like some more feedback from some of you turbo guys on it.

Throttle bodies aren't new to me. I've been doing these technically longer than I've been porting engines. This 8 TB, even though it's a drive-by-wire unit, is the same as alot of other factory TB's in its dimensions. The job done on this yields the same improvements that those other vehicles have seen.

I charged Suay $200; $150 for the job and $50 for the TB itself. His feedback is his alone. I also didn't ask him to post this thread (I had no idea he did).

I'll attach a couple of photos.

I am waiting on some more feedback (like from CH) and MAF numbers to show if there is really any difference. If there is I will be ordering one. What is the turn around time or is it a core exchange? Do you have extra TB to sell for $50 like you did for suay?

You and me both, atleast on a larger scale. I've done a few for NA cars and one for a turbo car (suay's) so I'm still trying to feel it all out myself to see if the cost of labour and parts by you guys is justified in terms of performance gain. I personally feel that it is having done derivatives of this for a long time but it's ultimately up to you guys.

The TB I got was from a friend who parts out Rx8's. That was a one-time deal and was done to try this out on Suay's car a few months back. I might be able to do it again but will probably only do it as a sale item on eBay after it's been ported similar to how I did it with Suay.
