Thanks Keck, let me know how it goes.

I'm having Carl Ryan (MadTaz I think) tune mine with Mazda Edit. I sent him my OEM ROM file to generate a base tune. He wanted to start there in case there were any differences as he's in the UK, plus he didn't have a 6 port auto file handy.

I'm still a few weeks out from tuning though. I'm waiting on some custom components to get fabbed up and some special order items to arrive. I've also been working on things like internally polishing the LIM, which is a bitch and a half.

Carl should be able to get it dialed in quickly since he has one. Did he say anything about the honeycomb filter?

Can't say as I had an issue with the honeycomb flow straightener versus the OEM dual screen intake. The previous two owners of the kit, in their cooperative wisdom, managed to nail it out of the box. It was a minor adjustment or two in the AccessPort to get a baseline flow rate.

MM said there is no reason for the honeycomb filter not to work but it will be dependent on getting the math exactly right in how they are placed relative to the MAF. A regular mesh screen like the oem one is more than satisfactory

FWIW, Carl got back to me and said he recommends the honeycomb air straightener, that's what he uses in his and it works fine.

The honeycomb is a much better solution than the mesh screen not only because it works better but screens have a tendency to fail even on N/A engines !

Hmm. I'll keep it in mind if I have to start a new tune from scratch. My current tune is so close to perfect that I dont want to mess it up and start over or risk anything. Let me know how yours works out obliterx8. I would imagine Carl is going to base his tune off of his own tune.

No problem Keck, will do.

I've finished my port/polish job. My last pieces were the throttle body (remove the step but not open up where the throttle plate shuts) and the LIM (what a bitch that was). Here are some pictures, the first 2 are before, the rest after. You can see I couldn't quite get all of the LIM runners.

I will add that if any of you are on Instagram, give me a follow, I have other pictures of my progress on there. @mazdaspeed.rx8 or click here: https://www.instagram.com/mazdaspeed.rx8/

I was talking to the shop that built my motor yesterday. I had a compression check done by another shop since its coming up on a year later and the numbers were good (112/114 at 250). Jim told me his is actually doing another build for a SC owner. It was the gray one that used to go to shows all around Philly. When I re read this whole thread last year, I came across it. The original owner no longer has it but maybe the new owner will join us

They pop up for sale every so often. Just takes a bit of patience. I usually see them on the RX8 Parts forum. Prices vary quite a bit depending on condition and how complete the kit is

Keck, thanks for the update on a fellow Pettit owner. Hopefully he helps us get our acts together!

I thought someone in Florida was selling an RX-8 with the Pettit kit on it. Try looking back a few pages.

I've been trying to get Scott at RX8Performance to make me a Pettit intake and triple rotor tank setup for 4 months now, but just keep getting excuses. Does anyone have any input here? Is he with the wait? Is there a better alternative offering? Is anyone selling a used one of either? I'm waiting on these two components alone to finish my install and it's really pissing me off to be looking at a torn apart car rather than enjoying driving it while summer is still here.

obliterx8 I have not bought anything from rx8 performance. Do you have some sort of intake? Maybe reach out to Carl at RRP and see if he can make something for you. Otherwise any AEM intake kit *should* work as long as it gets tuned with it on

Keck, I did reach out to Carl, and didn't hear back. Maybe he just missed my email. I just found a nice used MazdaSpeed intake, so I bought that. I should be able to get it to work as you suggested - I may just delete one section of piping or something.

Now, the last major thing I need to work out is a tank setup for windshield washer fluid, sohn reservoir, and oil catch can. Anyone have any suggestions?

I'll also need to figure out some check valves for the vac lines. What are you all using? Where all will I need to put them? I may be able to figure this out as I start routing hoses, but would like to get everything I need in advance.

Thanks.

What is the appropriate diameter for this section of our intakes?

I, too, have been trying to get ahold of that little segment with the 3 bungs and the port for MAF sensor, but to no avail. I am willing to butcher the crappy Weapon-R hot-air intake that the previous owner had installed on the car when I bought it (no problem for me - I swapped back the stock box several years ago) if it is the correct diameter, since it has the correct bungs and the MAF port. I can just cut off the curved section and install the mesh air-straightener in it. I would also need to know the correct length, I suppose.

I believe this will be the last piece I really need for my SC, aside for some little things like maybe a nut or bolt or something.

OtherSyde,

I just found/bought a used MazdaSpeed intake, which will be usable as far as this section goes, and should match the OEM size. I can measure the ID for you when it shows up later this week.

My kit didn't come with the Pettit MAF tube either - the previous owner used a MazdaSpeed intake and misplaced this section that he wasn't using.

Any thoughts on an auxilliary 3 tank setup? Carl couldn't help (washer tank fits on the other side on his RHD), Racing Beat said they're too busy and too expensive, and a lot of other rotary shops don't do fab work (welding). I really hate for this one last piece to the puzzle to be half-assed.

I was thinking about having some CNC cut gaskets made to replace the originals. Would anyone be interested? I could have a few sets cut them split them up for everyone, if there's a need.

I know you can just cut your own, but these would be precision cut. Any interest? No idea on cost yet.

The rx8performance fluid tanks look nice - though I see you've already experienced the customer service. Maybe call up and check whether they have any of the tanks you want in stock before paying. Do it over Paypal or credit card so you can recover any costs easily if you don't receive the goods.
https://www.rx8performance.com/collections/fluid-tanks/
Any auto fab shop should be able to make these tanks - doesn't need to be a rotary specialist. Just be careful with the washer fluid level sensor - many have reported how easily they break.
Could always try Black Halo Racing - they may not sell tanks, but I'm sure Charles could make a recommendation.

Regarding check valves, you should be able to re-use the plastic OEM ones on the original vac lines. I did this diagram when I was putting my turbo setup together. May be useful:

Thanks man, that diagram is super helpful; much appreciated.

I've read up on Scott's history, but most of what I've read is a little older. I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt as I don't know the whole story. All I can say for sure is his tanks look nice and I'd like him to make them, but I've been waiting for over 4 months now, so I need to explore other options, or my car may never run again.

The MazdaSpeed pipe measures about 85mm (3-3/8"). I hope this helps.

So can anyone tell me what these two ports on the "intake" pipe of the Pettit kit are for? One is threaded and empty, the other was threaded but has a brass tube stuck in it. I'll probably need to remove that and retap. What were these meant for???

Don't mind the roughed up pipes - I'm starting a repolish.

Just an update here, for those that still come around.

I got a Koyo aluminum radiator and installed it. What a nice piece. I also got some nice foam and tried to do a good job to seal the airflow on all 4 sides. I'll double-check that it's sealed to the undertray as I get farther along.

I also got a really nice aluminum double-tank setup from BennettBuilt. It took a little longer than I would have liked, but it looks phenomenal. This replaces the OEM plastic tank and the Pettit plastic tank. I had him put in 2 level sensors (1 per tank) and tie them together so that if either is low, the light on the dash will come on. Completely OEM-level integration, just the way I like it.

I received a huge box of custom gunmetal silicone hoses in from Samco. I ordered through Silicone Hose Kits (don't think I'm allowed to link), and Jeff there was super helpful and communicative, even with the long wait and large order size. Best service I've had in a long time for sure.

I'm also trying to work with LRB Speed for a custom air box tray to fit around the BennettBuilt tanks. It sounds like they can help, they just haven't had time yet. I get it, it's a side business, and we all need down time/family time. I'm looking forward to the results.

I'm still waiting on my Pettit intake from RX8Performance, and haven't had any word on their triple tank setup I wanted. These are the last pieces of the puzzle I need, so hopefully they can fab them up soon.

I've been going crazy sand blasting brackets and stuff to have them powdercoated. They should look pretty sweet when they're all done. It's the details that stand out.

Lastly, I'm still looking for an answer to my previous post, if anyone can help me out.

I am still around! Man those coolant tanks are beautiful. So did you splice the sensor for the coolant level and run two sensors or just have the fluid level shared between both? I am running the same green coolant in both the motor and the kit so I guess I could do the same. It would be nice for a warning but even nicer for the appearance versus the zip tied hack that it is now.

What Pettit intake is that?
