Yet another greddy turbo kit problem thread
Sup guys. I helped my buddy install a greddy turbo kit, the problems start here. The kit we got, was the emanage ultimate kit, but for some reason, didnt have the harness in it. also, the instructions it came with were for the origional emanage kit. So after I installed everything and finally got a harness from greddy, start it up, smokes like a mother. its white smoke and smells like it running SUPER rich, so rich it burns your eyes. Idle is pretty rough but doesnt stall out. CEL is on but i cant run the scan tool on it because it gives me a connection error im guessing due to the emanage ultimate. the e-man doesnt show any codes. Any ideas? ive been seaching the forums for the past 5 hrs straight and have found only bad news, and things i really dont want to get into. the car drives and pulls like it should. only problem being the smoke and rough idle. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Car has custom 3in midpipe if that has anything to do with it.

exactly what BlueRen said and it would not hurt if they were an authorized Greddy shop. Why? If and when something is messed up and or missing they can easily diffuse problems because they have that professional work relationship.
By the way, do you have an AFR gauge ....you say you are running rich...so forth...what instruments are you using for this turbo set up

I assume its running rich, it only seems to smoke when it wants to, under load while driving it doesnt smoke. but when you come to a stop it smokes most of the time. it just smells like massive amount of fuel. This isnt normal is it? out of the box the kit shouldnt act like this? smoke and really rough idle? anything that could be wrong on install? vaccume lines? anything?

i read somthing about the positions of the AIR port on the greddy down pipe made the O2 sensors act goofy. is the exact postiton of the O2 sensors important? the 3in catless midpipe doesnt have the 2nd O2 sensor in the stock location.
It smokes from the exhaust at idle. idles rough. i havent noticed any leaks or anything. the main thing i need to fix is the smoking issue.

I don't have any background with smoking turbos at idle, but I've read a number of threads on this forum that have described what you are now describing:

i doubt this is the problem but when my turbo went out, tons of white smoke at idle and went away after driving but back again at idle. It was the oil bleeding through the dead seals in the turbo into the exhaust system and then burning. Like I said, i doubt with a brand new turbo that is the problem but could be a faulty one.
Take the connection loose from the downpipe to the midpipe and see if there is a large amount of oil puddled or maybe residue there, it should be a lot, if its like mine was.

You might want to superglue one of the screens from the factory airbox under the airnix, that helped out idle a little. Also if you have a BOV you might want to adjust and tighten the screw a little. When I first installed my turbo it smoked a little but that has stopped a while ago, now it runs fine.

That's what I thought too, but it turned out my coils were fried.
The way the EMU kit ships, I don't think your car will have any issue at idle or driving.
Make sure you have no leaks in your hoses or in the couplers on the turbo kit. And check your coils. If I had replaced my coils first thing, I'd have saved about a month of wondering why god hated me so much.

also, are you bogging when you shift, or are you bogging when you give it gas? The other problem I had was the BOV. It caused the car to backfire a lot, and bog down. Recirculating the bov air back into the intake (after the MAF) fixed it.
Since my car is now running nicely, I decided to take off the recirculate and try it out again without. It backfires like a **** and bogs again. So looks like I need that on till my EMU is map based.

Another reason I am slowly changing my mind about putting a turbo on my car.
I have a serious comment/question. I'm sure they run good once they are tuned but is adding a turbo really worth all the headaches. I've seen a good deal of turbo'd 8's for sale on here.....what gives. Do you guys get bored with them or are the problems the reason for the sale?

If you get it running properly, the turbo makes the car twice as fun. But there's a lot more things that can go wrong. So don't do it if you're not into cars, messing with them, and keeping an eye on things. If you already change your own oil, rotate your own tires, then you'd be a good candidate.
I think it's worth it, the car is much faster.

If they work right the first time then yes. I put a turbonetics kit on my 350z and still love everypeny of it. never had any probs with it.
has anybody else had these specific issues?

Well your tuning is as pressure based as it is going to get using the EMU. Your EMU is adding fuel based on pressure/rpm. The EMU technically has the option to tune based solely on MAF because you can use airflow/rpm for your load calculations.
So when it's said that you can choose between MAF and MAP tuning with the Ultimate your options are 1) add fuel based on airflow or 2) add fuel based on pressure. The stock MAF is still functioning in both cases because it is giving the engine the "baseline" amount of fuel needed to maintain the factory determined Air/Fuel ratio. I believe it just runs out of range on its tables when the turbo increases airflow beyond a certain point.
Our only option for complete pressure based tuning is by using the Interceptor X. It works like a standalone because it uses its own pressure sensor to provide tuning in all ranges. The stock MAF output is completely ignored.

I have had no problems with my turbo except for a cel that came on a while back about the tuning valve stuck open, and thats because with the ultimate upgrades you have to put a blocking plate in that stops airflow into the secondary ports. Other than that my car is the ****, I don't regret it for a second. I abused a mazdaspeed6 at the track last weekend(w/ 20" rims on). The funny thing about it is that he was talking **** the whole time we were in line getting ready to pull up to the tree, and greddy hides the intercooler so good that you will never know there is a turbo unless you hear my BOV or your looking directly under my bumper.
