Noob to rotary turbo, but not FI. HELP

so, im coming up on some money soon, and i'd really like to go FI (turbo specifically) with my 8, so far, in terms of affordability (id like to keep some of the money im receiving) im looking at the greddy kit, i've heard some bad things about the included emanage unit, i have also read that some of the newer kits produced by greddy include a more functional tune in the emangage. i've also looked at the SFR kit, but dont like the idea of an extremely hot turbine housing sitting that close to rubber belts (had this problem with my z31 with a front mount turbo) and the esmeril kit is a little expensive, BUT, is very complete from what i can see. i cant remember where i saw it, but someone listed the greddy kit with the emanage ultimate (opposed to the blue box) with a loaded tune that ran better than that included by greddy.
Any input on this would be nice, thanks.

Here is the short answer :
Buy a greddy kit ,
upgrade the turbo
Ditch the Emangle and buy the Cobb from MM with his tuning service
Upgrade the couplers
Buy an AEM intake and ditch the greddy one
Buy an HKS ssqv BOV
Buy Meth injection (if you want your apexs to survive the inevitable )
modify, flow test and refit the P2 yellows

300+ easy whp and a sweet ride .
Think that's close ......

olddragger 03-24-2010 09:00 AM

then why buy the greddy kit if you are replacing the turbo, intake and engine management system? Wouldnt a build your own kit be better? Newb ? about turbo systems, sorry :)
Have you considered a supercharger system?
Both are good--great to have choices.

Basically, you don't want to go with e-Manage.

seidita84t 03-24-2010 09:29 AM

considered the s/c, but, its more expensive for 1, and like i said, i have turbo experience, my 84 z31 was putting close to 320 at the wheels, and my 66 bug with a blow through set up was putting almost 130 (hey, its a big number for a bug)
Brettus, something along the lines of your plan sounds good, but my main concern is the engine management. not looking to upgrade the turbo yet, 1 cost, 2 im not planning on tearing holes through a slab of asphalt YET.

anyone else have opinions/input?
So far, looks like i'd be going with the greddy kit + cobb (possibly meth injection)

thanks

Brettus nailed it.

If you dont want to upgrade the turbo run the stock greddy till it dies(by that time you may have saved for the upgrade or just be happy with it) boost low make 280 hp and use meth just in case. I would definitely get the upgraded couplers and if you go with the MM option you will need either a custom fabbed intake or the aem. You could always run Int-x also for EMS... its an option.

seidita84t 03-24-2010 09:49 AM

out of curiosity, why would i need a different intake with the mm/cobb option? i mean, if it was truly up to me, id go esmeril all the way, but its out of my price range, possibly thinking of saving? waiting? damn it, that'd be sooo damn hard...

ZumnRx8 03-24-2010 10:26 AM

+1 with BRettus and definitely METH injection... its not expesive.... Its like $300 for the AEM METH KIT from BlackHaloRacing.com and $100 for the BHR throttle body spacer for the methanol inject nozzles. Its what Im doing for my FI project. (greddy kit as well) with HKS SSQ, COBB AP, etc.et.c

Because as a base starting point , the Greddy kit is good .
A Greddy kit with an upgraded turbo is about perfect for a street driven 8 . Building your own is beyond most people but yeah it's an option for some .
The Esmeril turbo is too big (unless you want a drag racer) IMO

tubingchamp 03-24-2010 10:54 AM

Screw you, now I want to get water/meth injection..

Didn't know BHR had it on the cheap :(

Budget...

Going... Through.... ROOF...

I've been told good things about both the SFR and Esmeril setups. From one friend that is a shop owner about the Esmeril kit "it's not pretty, but if you're looking to make a shitload of power it works".

^ i think its pretty but its expensive and well it all depends on your overall goals i guess. Water meth can be a life saver.........my boost juice just came in today lol. The BHR throttle body space seems cool some added bling and easy install. We tapped my greddy piping it would have been easier with the spacer.

You should figure out your budget and plan accordingly FI punches you in the pockets lol.

Yep, I've got the Hymee kit coming, thing is, it has a custom MAF tube/accordian tube delete and throttle body.. Not sure if there will be enough room for the spacer there..

Hope so, will find out :)

RX8YA 03-24-2010 12:31 PM

^ Good point.......I love the engraved hymee shroud im jealous....

ZumnRx8 03-24-2010 04:35 PM

Turbo>sc....imo

tubingchamp 03-24-2010 05:02 PM

Bang for the buck, yes, turbo wins.

It will get you the most HP for the least money.

But this is not the place to start a debate, Zumn.

Brettus 03-24-2010 05:04 PM

/\ well diffused Tubing ....

bhop 03-24-2010 06:10 PM

^ This is true...

Honestly, Brettus pretty much nailed it for you. Go with the greddy and "save" yourself some money. I can promise you happiness after you are finished. I believe this kit is a great starting point for the RX-8 and there are so many ways of going about this build.

seidita84t 03-24-2010 06:37 PM

thanks for all your input, looks like i will be going with the greddy kit once i get this money (better happen damn it) and using the MM/cobb with water/meth injection... thanks, and ill keep you guys posted once this all goes through

I know it doesnt sound important but even if youre not going for high horsepower, I would still get your turbo upgraded by BNR. Their turbo comes with a water cooled CHRA. That alone is worth it to me, let alone bigger and better internals for more power when youre ready. Just my $.02

olddragger 03-25-2010 09:49 PM

sounds like a plan---welcome to the darkside!
