Hi,
I desperately need help from rotary experts. RG, MM, Scott, Rgonza and Manuel – please HELP!
I have a simple but dimensionally accurate engine model. I have a generic turbocharger model – fairly representative of T4 size. I need to dream up a most efficient packaging from every point of view. 1. Handling/weight distribution, 2.Engine reliability/performance, 3.Creature comfort.

To satisfy 1. I need:
1) Turbo as low and as rearwards as possible. BTW what is the typical weight of T04Z, GT2876R, and GT3584R etc.?
2) Possibly look at water/air IC (have to learn more about those) and locate it in area (on the floor) designated by yellow arrow on picture_2. There will be relatively good airflow there as well. I’d hate to have IC forward of front axle. Lesser bulky pieces there will help front mechanical grip.
3) I will most definitely try oil/water heat exchanger, on our F3 Dallara’s we tried all possible solutions. Oil cooler on the line from oil tank to engine. (Moderate oil temps and low water temps. But oil cooler will die in about 20 laps or so.) Oil cooler on scavenging line from engine to oil tank. (Higher oil temps and a fraction higher water temps. Cooler is fine and also helps fighting foam in the oil). Oil/Water heat exchanger on oil return line gave best overall results. Lowest oil temp, highest but well within safe boarder water temps. In all variants cooler was located in favorable flow having higher (relatively) pressure before it and lower pressure behind it.
How ever if testing will show that with rotary in this particular chassis oil/air works better than let it be.
4) Lesser length of various piping (exhaust, water, oil, fuel, charge etc.) – those tend to add up in weight very fast.
5) UMIC is undesirable because CGH is higher as a result.

For 2. I need:

HERE I NEED YOUR HELP!
1) Manifold – what is required? Lengths, position relative to engine etc.?
2) Turbo positioning – axis angle relative to ground, turbo relative to engine. Positioning of wastegate etc.
3) Exhaust after turbo – I will have to package everything within area (on the floor) designated by red arrow on picture2. There’s plenty of space there – same way it is done on SLR.
4) What also do I need also? IC piping is becoming a bit tricky if I want to have water/air IC where I want it (see above)
5) What about intake – how different its arrangement has to be relative to NA engine? Like with NA piston engine we would need appropriately sized and shaped. What will be needed for turbo?

For 3. I need:

Turbo and exhaust as far as possible from the tub. How ever it is not really possible and some serious heat insulation will be necessary. Arghhh! Hate that heavy stuff.

I will gladly welcome advice and opinion from experts and experienced forum members.

I've got a muffler idea that may work good for you. It's not like anything you've ever seen before. I've also got a nice intake manifold idea for you. I wish I were handy at CAD so I could draw them up but I'm not. I have Autocad 2007 but I haven't learned how to use it yet.

Sorry mate, I have to dissapoint you :cwm27: Engine bay is already redesigned to accept 20B without modifications. :rock: I have to remember that there are several crazy people out there. Some of them are members of this great forum :Freak_ani . And definately there is lots of totally insane well funded russians :Eyecrazy: I gotta have an option for them.

Give me the amount of area that the muffler has to fit into. It would also be helpful to know where in relation to this area the inlet pipe and outlets pipes can be placed. I need to see if the design will work with the space alloted. A larger area is better in this case.

Can I get something that is 12" round by at least 12" long or more in the required area? I can alter dimensions somewhat but that's a good place to start.

That area is actually big. As you can see on pic4 length is 37"+. Height of tub there is 14"+. Obviously there's a lot more space up above there till the hood/fender height.

BTW, SLR managed to nicely package a big cat and huge muffler in similar area. To the cat exhaust tube was going upwards from floor and than from cat to muffler - downwards. Both cat and muffler where positioned vertically.
