Merc's Turbo Build
Well Greg's turbo came in and now off to all the work for installation. Unfortunately it is just hot outside, but the coming months will just get hotter. Better to start now than later. Forums have been great with all the information available to what the car has become today. Thank you all for all the great knowledge posted in these forums.

Attachment 225205 Cleaning was a pain, and the forums didn't help much about taking the pan off... Talked to Greg and he gave me some good insight, had the thing off in no time. Attachment 225206 Another pic of an install I know, and yes next is to also clean up the engine area, as this pic is kind of embarassing compared to some of the nice engine areas on this forum. I am just glad my knuckles can take break for a moment. |

Looking great, I'm glad the turbo kit has gone to a good home!
|
Good luck with your build!

Out of curiosity, ever monitor your oil pressure? If so what where your peaks?
|
Hope it all comes together for you ...
|
Greg has been a great help on the install, the MM wastegate actuator is huge compared to the Greddy one, nearly had me pulling my hair out getting the thing to mount.

Waited until I had everything apart before I installed it. Ordered another part from Scott and it was the twin ACS fans. The coolant that will be running through the fans are to be connected and should help cool the coolant for the turbo quite well. Before setup I was in traffic and temps went to 209, want to try and bring those down. |
Well REmedy Oil mod installed, now waiting on the gauge pod and should be moving on a ahead.
|
Have you had a chance to test the Powertrix Coils yet? I didn't know they made stuff for Mazda.

I drove around for a week before doing the turbo install, the handling is notable, I bought I believe the 11/7k setup. The adjustments are easy to make, and some people say the backs are harder to get to, but once the tire is off, its not so difficult especially with the jack pushing up on it, turns with no issue more a pain when they build up with junk. I have to take out the rears as I thought I could reach the dampener adjusters with them installed but realized nope, not possible. |
Loaded the MM FI base map and completed installing all the engine components back, and started her up. Next is to takes Greg's advice and spray the couplers with brake cleaner to double check that there are no vacuum leaks.
Any other good words of wisdom? |

not sure putting the IC on an angle like that was a great idea . You should have a clear space under the IC for air to get to the Rad. unimpeded. You may not notice any issues until you start pushing it , I've been there ............................ |
I don't see a recirc tube, :nono:

nice build. From what I have read you're going to want it recirculated...

Yeah, I was on a debate whether to do it or not, I have been reading different builds or thoughts on the forum, and it seems like they are all up in the air. Well 50/50 at least.

Well thinking I can go kill 2 birds with one stone... I could sell my AEM CAI for 130ish on the forum, and pick up the same intake that Greg has with the recirculation bung welded on already from Scott.
This way the intercooler stands straight vs angled, and the recirc is connected. Whats the worst that happens, I no longer get the excessive heat coming from the intercooler and rad. Sounds like a plus, but to your point Brettus, I agree, with light driving it may be fine, but with drawing in cooler air it is a winning situation, especially when driving hard. |
Good luck with your build. See if you can V mount the intercooler by laying it flat on the undertray and adding a divider to direct air to both components.

Just seen an AEM CAI sell for 210 on the forums, I guess I will get a good chunk back. Great news.
|
Anything else from the peanut gallery on other mods I could quickly throw on before putting her back together? My new CAI will arrive next week, and parts should be arriving tomorrow "Fan control kit and the ACS", the CAI will correct the issue with the IC and the intake area, along with the recirc.
Hoping I can find time to get her tuned in August, but so far looking bad. Grad school beating me up and work has me going to Iowa the first week then Houston. |
