Increased oil consumption w/ turbo
I have noticed my oil consumption has about doubled since installing the turbo. Anybody else notice an increased oil consumption?

Turbo's tend to massively cook oil, since they are basically using the car's oil supply and reach exhaust temps or higher when under full boost.
Are you running synthetic? Considering the heat issues cropping up in certain areas involving oil coolers, I'd really worry about overtaxing an already hot running oil system with dino based oils. I'd suggest performing a UOA to see if any wear is abnormally high. http://www.blackstone-labs.com There are a few Rx8 UOA's now, so you'd have a baseline to compare to. |
Do NOT use synthetic oils on a rotary. when the rotors turn some oil is injected into the engine and just by the design of the engine it is burned up with the combustion phase and this will leave a nasty residue in your engine.

Oh God, please don't start that again.

I thought I heard something about Mazda killing the first born of people who put synthetic in a rotary..... ;)

Yeah, I noticed that too. I go through about a quart every few weeks. Before it was a quart every other month.

Sorry if we came over a little harsh. There has been alot of discussion/argument over synthetics lately. I and many others have been using it for a long time with great results. Racing Beat, Rotary Performance, and other big companies have also been using it for a long time with great results. The issues with synthetics goes back a long way in time and have long since been resolved with seals and new formulations. There are people that still believe this and it is really no different than saying the rotary engine is unreliable because it was back in the 70's. There are people that still think that too. Things have changed quite a bit. Synthetics are perfectly fine for use in rotaries.

wow thanks for thats info. my dad and i have always used synthetics until i got my 8. All i every heard was that the rotary and synthetics dont mix but im glad that has changed. thanks
