How to pass emissions with FI?
I live in the state of Tennessee and I have to do a emissions test ever year.
Is it even remotely possible to get a turbo / sc car through emissions? Have anyone passed emissions in the US with FI? /twospoons |
You might be lucky http://www.state.tn.us/environment/apc/vehicle/obd.php
So long as you don't have any CEL's you might pass. |
If the AFR at idle is near stoich, why wouldn't it (as long as you don't have CEL's)? A lot of FI'd folks remove their cat to get better flow, but you certainly don't have to. That would certainly lead to a failed emissions test!

Like others said, I don't see why it wouldn't pass the actual emissions test. It would fail the visual inspection, unless you were able to hide everything with the stock engine covers, which can be done with the geddy kit. Just hope they don't take them off.

Not very many states do a visual. As far as I am aware, Tennessee only checks for codes. I had a 420a eclipse with a built motor, big turbo, exhaust, high flow cat, emanage, big injectors, etc, and it passed emissions just fine in Georgia. It is possible.

I'm not sure about the emissions laws there but here in Texas we don't have a visual inspection. Even if they see you have mods, they don't care. All that matters here is that everything checks out when they plug into the OBD-II port. Even if you do have the sniffer test, you haven't touched the porting of the engine so any effects on emssions should be minimal at best within the test range and it should still pass.

Guess I'll don't have to loose sleep over this issue anymore. Not that I have a turbo / sc yet, but now it becomes hard to resist Hymees Twin Screw :)
Thanks guys. |

Maybe I shouldnt have told you that :b |
LOL!
Back on topic... depending on how strict the tailpipe check is... and S/C is your best bet. A turbo isn't impossible... just more difficult if they are going to get as detailed as checking tailpipe emissions on a cold engine. The turbo will suck heat out of the exhaust making your cat take longer to get to operating temp... thus my S/C comment. |
