Help: Satan's Hairdryer problem
 

Ok so ill first tell you how this happened. With the help from a mechanic friend we installed MM's upgrade for the greddy kit. After installation when I turned the car on I felt a HUGE vibration from under the car. After a closer look we found out that the oil return was rubbing against the crossmember. He did some custom work but I find it is still way too close and sometimes when I take left turns a bit too aggressively it still rubs. I spoke to Jeff and he told me that it shouldn't sit that low and that I should check the motor mount. Well since I'm not sure how to check if the motor mount is good or not I took some pics of the setup so you guys can help me troubleshoot this.

AHh. First, you need to take a picture of the part of the motor mount where the "tongue" of the rubber mount is between the range limiters on the aluminum bracket mounted to the engine.
If it is rubbing more on turning, then I'd almost definitely say the mount is toast.
You can also shim the mount with a washer or two to get additional clearance, but that should only be done after you are sure you have a good motor mount there.

Second, your turbo center section was clocked.
Either your installer took the turbo apart or, more likely, the previous owner took it apart (again).
The center section is supposed to be rotated so that the oil discharge line is righ against the turbo inlet flange.
The previous owner took the turbo apart when he received it (and damaged the compressor wheel, which I replaced for him out of my own pocket when he insisted that it "came that way"), so it is likely that he took it apart again when he received the replacement turbo.

Also - I am going to send out your couplers and injectors again. This waiting on USPS is getting ridiculous. I'll send it UPS this time.
When the first ones get there, just send them back to me.

THat motor mount looks ok! If it's not torn or anything it's ok!

Ok so basically Im going to have to pay my mechanic to take the setup appart and change the clock on the center piece so that the oil discharge line is facing the correct way?

By the way just to make sure I got this right. By clocking you mean rotating the cold side so that the return line is facing towards the intlet?

heh. I don't understand why the replacement turbo was not shipped to the new owner directly.

I had not sent payment to the other guy so thats why. It was already in talks but I had not made the payment yet. Thats why it wasnt sent directly to me.

Well, if he had followed the directions in the first place, this wouldn't be happening.

Im not complaining man the guy didnt follow instructions and I know it, thats why im not doing stuff with that guy anymore. I have another guy that is way better.

No. You rotate the center section.
You loosen both the hot and cold side 1/2" bolts and rotate the center to fit.

I test fit these things on an actual motor, so it shouldn't be needed.
But, as I mentioned, things "happen", so test fitting is always needed.
Measure twice, cut once.

Anything is possible.

The alignment of the motor on its mounts is pretty variable.
Depending on what his installer did, any number of scenarios might exist.
However, the one solution fits them all - pay attention and adjust according to fit.

If the installer had noticed the fitment of the drain by test-fitting as indicated by both the instructions and good, common sense, it would have been relatively easy to adjust the clocking of the turbo or the height of the motor mount to fit.

Not that I know off, I think the only things he took off were the cross member and the motor mount. I am mostly sure that its just not clocked the right way. I will try and get in touch with my new mech and work this out with him.

i remember this turbo now. i wanted to buy it. i remember asking swoope if he could check it out for me.

The turbo was sent in perfect unused condition, only problem was that it was not clocked correctly. I just hope I can get this fixed soon hehe

I'd hope so! It was the second brand-new turbo I sent the previous owner and I took a TON of pictures of it just in case there was more hanky-panky ahead from him.

Yeah I checked it as soon as I recieved it. I would have ordered from you but I had the chance of having it sooner since it takes you a while cause you dont have them in stock always.

But yeah it was all perfect.
