FAO the 300whp club (turbo)

Hi Guys,

I am currently in the process of gettin ready to have my GT3071R installed and was just wondering out of interest what speed do you guys find you can get to before it stops pulling hard.

Sorry if this is the wrong section though bearing in mind to have over 300whp you need have made some major upgrades I thought I would ask here.

Also congrats on all the Build thread completions recently, I have been reading and following :)

THanks

What other supporting mods do you have?

chickenwafer 08-10-2009 05:44 PM

^Yeah what he said

It pulls all the way through the gearbox, your top speed isn't effected.

However, it takes LOT less time to get there! :lol2:

dozer 08-10-2009 05:48 PM

god i need a turbo

True story

mysql101 08-10-2009 05:50 PM

I think he means at what speed does it stop pulling. In a stock car, once you're around 80 or 90, the mph increase starts to get slow. It gets really slow once you're around 120 mph.

Interestingly enough, I have hit 140 when I was NA. But with the turbo, I don't think I've gone faster than 130. There just didn't seem like there was much point in it.

That IS interesting, I would think that temptation would increase in proportion to tq curve

Actually it didnt for me either with my Vette. I would drive the piss out of it when it was stock. but once I did all the work and supercharged it....I really never ran it out often. I would go to the track with it, but on the roads I think I actually calmed down with it. Maybe I just got older :)

Brettus 08-10-2009 06:42 PM

It stops pulling when you hit the rev cut

blackmagic8 08-11-2009 02:03 AM

Yes, what I mean was at what speed does it stop pulling hard. Exactly as mysql said stock gets really slow around 120mph.

I understand what you're saying that it stops pulling when you hit the red line Brettus but if you were doing 160 would it still pull hard.

CHeers for the reply so far

Rote8 08-26-2009 08:12 PM

When you are running at 120-130 and still feel yourself being pushed back hard in the seat, your foot loses traction fast.

Brettus 08-26-2009 08:19 PM

/\ true - your foot becomes more closely connected to your balls at that point

blackenedwings 08-26-2009 08:45 PM

I haven't hit more than 120 so far with the 3071R but it was pulling hard as hell still. It takes a lot of getting used to from stock but the car is literally perfect with a turbo imo. I love everything about it.

Frosty288 08-27-2009 07:23 AM

What A/R is the 3071 that comes in the MM kit? I'm assuming you're all using the 3071 from that kit? Sorry guys, I think this is my first post. :wavey: But I do come from a line of boosted cars and am looking to buy an RX8 very soon.

Don't you think by moving to a 3076, or a larger A/R on the 3071 you'd be able to keep the pressure up until redline?

bse50 08-27-2009 07:29 AM

I Think that the 3076 won't fit where the 3071 does. MazdaManiac's setup is not a top mount :)

Why wouldn't it fit? The housing options are the same for the 3076 as they are the 3071, the difference is the 76 uses a 76mm compressor/56 trim wheras the 3071 uses a 71mm compressor/56 trim. The turbines are the same.

But the reason I was really asking was is this necessary to keep the desired boost until redline, anyways? Or is the 3071 sufficient for this motor at lets say 350whp? (Which, from my reading, is around 13psi for a turbo of this size on this motor?)

bhop 08-27-2009 08:30 AM

Yea, I guess you would push the car at times when NA. I still have my 350z single turbo and although I don't drive it hardly anymore, It seemed that when NA I'd always find myself pushing the car daily but when it was completely gutted and with just the turbo and a roll cage I started to slow down a bit but just knowing that the power is there is so pleasing and it makes the car seem so relaxing at times and I never found myself trying to do highspeed runs like when it was just a NA 350z.

blackenedwings 08-27-2009 09:53 AM

The 3071R pulls to redline without a problem, but there is no need to go much beyond 8k rpms because of the peak torque/hp comes earlier. I tend to shift earlier to get the really meaty part of the power. Third gear in particular throws me back in the chair quite nicely. The way my boost controller is set up right now goes up to 11 psi right now in the upper ranges of the higher gears and has no problem flowing to redline.

The compressor housing on the '76 is physically larger and wont fit in that position.

To the OP - 155 is the highest I've gone so far. That was on the front straight at Firbird on the main track and it was still pulling when I lifted. (Had no choice but to lift - 2 of the 3 braking zone markers had already gone by!)

bse50 08-27-2009 11:28 AM

Jeff, sorry to threadjack but would you put a 3076 instead of your custom 3071 turbine if there was enough room?
I never saw a comparison between the 2 units with a 13b msp and i'm curious :)

blackmagic8 08-27-2009 11:36 AM

Cheers for all the comments.

It's given me a good insight

Yeah, sure.
It will flow even more air and spool just as fast.

bse50 08-27-2009 11:43 AM

Really? You know i'm a 'tard when talking about FI :)
Impossible or hard fit? I can order Garret parts with huge discounts so i might give it a shot instead of going with the 3071...

chickenwafer 08-27-2009 11:46 AM

Plus on the 3076 you will more than likely need an external wastegate. It's hard to get int he GT 5-bolt turbine pattern with an internal gate, plus with it being larger you want the external w/g anyways
