DIY turbo kit

I want to start collecting parts to Turbo my 8 (i am based in the UK) and would be grateful for any help on suppliers for manifolds and downpipes to fit the standard system, have decided against the Greddy kit as i want to use the Cobb access port and a better turbo from the off so seems a waste to buy the greddy for just the manifold etc.

Turblown can make you a manifold but you also need to consider intercooler piping, IC, downpipe, BOV and intake plus additional concerns if doing a top mount like heat shielding, hard coolant lines, battery relocation, wastegate (if external).

I don't know what the laws are in the UK regarding aftermarket turbos but all non-GReddy kits are top mount so if you have strict visual emissions/safety tests having a big turbo sitting visible in the middle of your engine bay may cause you issues. With the GReddy kit the turbo is pretty much invisible aside from the IC piping. Also, even though with a GReddy you end up with a turbo and EMS you don't want to use it is still the least expensive base to start with if you shop around the for sale section here.

yeah sorry, i have been looking at the past for sale ads, can you tell me how much roughly the kit goes for used? and how heavy it is so i can try and figure out how much it would cost for someone to ship?
thanks
(no worries with emissions laws)
Would also be interested in knowing the cheapest price for a new Greddy kit

You've decided against the greddy kit, but want to use cobb? And now you want to find out the cost of a greddy kit? :dunno:

Please, be more specific with what your goals are. Do you want top/low/rear mount?
As I.T. suggested, Turblown can custom fab a turbo system for you.

keljon 10-25-2011 01:18 PM

A used greddy kit might be ok, basically I want a manifold and down pipe that will bold straight up to my standard exhaust, the rest I can source in the UK, if a used Greddy kit wasnt too expensive then I would be interested because I can upgrade the turbo to the MM unit and use the Cobb Access port rather than the included emanage.

A new greddy kit in the UK is around 4000gbp so it's expensive if I then have to buy the MM turbo and the Cobb as well.

Hope that makes it clearer

Yep - get hold of a beaten up second hand Greddy kit . Upgrade the exisiting turbo (if you can't get hold of a MM upgrade )and do all the other recommended upgrades .
Hard to beat a fast spooling 300ish whp RX8 .

Esmeril Racing 'Standard' Turbo Kit for Mazda RX-8 may be a good choice for your goal... from what I understand they are working on an option for use with the Accessport. 280-350whp from their claims.

We can sell you a new Greddy kit, or build whatever you like. We do sell the top mount parts; ie manifold & downpipe only.

What's your budget?

keljon 10-26-2011 03:38 AM

if i build my own kit up then i will buy a few bits at a time to spread the cost so whatever it takes to reach my goal i guess. I am rebuilding a spare motor at the moment so i have a while to collect the parts together

We're still talking about 7\10000$ to do things right.
You should consider that before even starting.

keljon 10-27-2011 04:32 AM

seems a lot of people are worried about my finances, dont worry i have a good job so i can afford it, will take me prob 6 months to get the parts together anyways.
7k USD is about 4.3k GBP, that would only just buy a new Greddy kit here.

We're not worried about your finances, we don't want another rx8 to be molested :)
The greddy turbo kit is only good in 2 cases:
You intend to keep completely unmodified, plus the 2 fixes or if you intend to replace the snail.
In either case it requires tuning (accessport), new couplers, a boost controller and something else for sure.

Honestly, I wouldn't go for it. Turblown has some nicer option for sale that are still accessport friendly. Even that's a compromise though, I don't like the idea of running straight premix without an OMP.

At the end of the day it's a 7\8k £ job to do it right and reliable once you factor the exchange rate, shipment costs etc.

I know of several cars that have run premix for 4+ years. Its not an issue.

Although I am trying to do a low mount GT35R turbo system again..

bse50 10-27-2011 09:51 AM

A low mount gt35r system would be a wonderful product.

Running without omp is not entirely harmless, it's documented that there's an increase in seal chatter because of the lack of "drippling" oil. Most users won't see a difference in the short\mid term.
That's basically the only reason why I keep it in place lol :)

Mazdatrix has a turbo manifold as well

JantzenRX-8 10-27-2011 10:11 PM

I'm not sure if Mazdatrix's manifold is officially for sale yet but sending some interest their way may help motivate them.

Nick838 11-01-2015 09:44 PM

Which companies do make turbo manifolds aside from Greddy and Turblown?

RX8Soldier 11-01-2015 10:04 PM

DIY turbo kit

You can order custom manifolds from specialty shops. There aren't enough turbo kits avail to justify companies spending money on turbo parts...
What's your goal?

Nick838 11-01-2015 10:44 PM

I am considering boosting my 8 but just trying to figure out the possibilities before I make my decision. I found one for right around 1400 but that seemed a little high but I'm not so sure.

too high?

What platform are you coming from?

If that price is too high I do not suggest going turbo.

Nick838 11-02-2015 06:43 AM

I'm not saying it's too high, I said it seemed a little high but I don't know what they go for. I have looked around and a turbo kit does cost but I don't mind it costing because I'd rather spend money and get the best then save money and get shit.

logalinipoo 11-02-2015 07:16 AM

greddy is proven with mods and good tuning the others look like shit mostly. I really like the rx8 performance one and it's low mount, but he won't let you buy it without the kit.

JimmyBlack 11-02-2015 07:36 AM

Greddy will be the least complicated for you. It's the most documented rx8 turbo kit and it's easier to install than a top-mount kit in terms of heat management (if you do this bit wrong with a top mount it can melt all sorts of bits in the engine bay). You'll need to budget for a rebuild of the Greddy turbo just in case it's needed, and at the same time it will allow you to put a slightly larger compressor wheel in there if you want a bit more top end power and a little less low end. If the kit you're looking at comes with the BNR/MM upgrade, then just rebuild it as is as the comp wheel will be suitable.

...that moment when you realize that you are "that guy"...

good info from the others who posted up
