Budget Greddy turbo intake upgrade .

This intake setup is for those who are sick of sucking in hot engine bay air and want more consistent maf readings without spending megabucks on an AEM intake etc.
Thanks to Monzue for supplying the coupler and clamp details .

Pics to come.

awesome thanks Bret, i'm sure a good number of us are like me and too lazy to do the upgrade. i need to do this but i'm going a slightly different route. also that airinx is terrible and will upgrade to a cone with medical gauze.

Thread revival.

Can you please attach some images so we can see what the final design is?

IIRC, this was his final version.

I think that image is for something else, an NA not Greddy turbo engine, and it doesn't match up with the parts. As an aside, I'm not a fan of aftermarket CAIs other than perhaps the Racing Beat/Mazdaspeed one as they lose more than they gain, particularly in the middle of the rev range where NA RX8s are already short of torque/power, and they are noisy (I know some people like noise, but The Boss and I don't). The performance of the stock Mazda arrangement is pretty hard to beat. That said, I admire the effort and creativity on this one, but like the others it'll only suit people who like noise and a bit of bling. Additionally, I'd be concerned over accuracy of MAF readings as the MAF is far too close to the join region, where the flow is uneven and turbulent, even with a flow straightener (for which there seems to be little or no room).

Yeah it was a joke.

This is the one I made. the MAF section has a honeycomb maf straightener and is machined. The rest is 3.5" pipe. I am using a different filter now that fits better. This one:

Thanks. That looks good and is the sort of thing I was thinking of doing, although my lack of easy access to machine tools means that I'll look initially for off-the-shelf components.

Ah, a joke. It is, and it gave a few minutes of pleasure pontificating away.

What's wrong with drainage pipe? Not only is PVC cheaper and easier to work with than aluminium, it is a much better heat insulator too.

As long as it is the correct diameter...or you scale your MAF it is perfectly good. The stock intake tube is plastic as well :)

The Y is a totally different matter....no way the poor MAF has a chance of trying to figure the airflow out around that transition
