better option than greddy or esmeril?

i was initially looks at greddy and esmeril. but after looking closer at esmeril i do not like a lot of things on it. so the greddy became the better choice. it still is, but there are so many things i would change on it that i can't help but wonder, is there anything better? by the time i finish modifying the greddy kit it would practically be all custom lol.

is there a way to get a greddy manifold by itself? or is there anyone else that makes a cast manifold like greddy's?

Personally I like the Esmeril kit. And I wanna say they've made some small improvements since they first designed the kit. They removed the wastegate from the engine bay (I think its located underneath the car around the cat unless they moved it again).

You can surf Ebay for someone parting a GReddy kit out. Wouldn't surprise me if you found one. I've seen several people on this site blow their turbo's and part out the rest of the kit.

Most people will tell you that the GReddy kit isn't a good kit. Problems with the wastegate, E-manage, and oil lines are pretty common problems. The MazdaManiac upgrade is pretty solid, but that requires buying another turbo and fixing any problems with your GReddy kit if you had any. Up to you.

What are you looking for in a turbo kit? There aren't very many other kits to look at. Have you seen MazdaManiacs Greddy Upgrade? Or SpeedForceRacing's kit?

Check the For Sale forum... couple kits on sale right now

G3TR3DDY2GR3DDY is actually selling the GReddy manny and DP

the greddy kit is AWESOME except for the actual greddy turbo itself. It's just too small and needs to be pushed too far out of it's efficiency range to see the kind of hp that people want.
Check out Mazdamaniac's upgrade to it, basically he replaces the snal with a Garett and it seems like a much better option.

the greddy is a good kit if you are using the cobb accessport....also there is some talk of some upgrades for the greddy turbo rather than the GT3071R, which look promising. Check out the turbo efficiency thread for details. I personally am getting my turbo upgraded thru tim's turbo's. It will bolt right back in with no modification and flow better than stock GReddy. Also he will stand behind his product. The GReddy turbo is really not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Just ask Brettus. ;)

MM greddy upgrade, but be sure to look around and be aware of the expected wait times

also look here for some more recently emerging(to the forum) options..https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-major-horsepower-upgrades-93/turbo-efficiency-range-rx-8-a-164708/page7/

i would never get an esmeril. imo, it has cheap parts and bad turbo placement (again imo)

i completely agree that greddy is not a bad kit. .it's just not a good kit.

i would get a greddy with the mazdamaniac upgrade, a bigger FMIC, a custom cai, you need to add a BOV. i don't really want the e-manage, i'd rather have the cobb accessport. then upgrade to t-bolt clamps and the do wastegate fix.

so really, after i'm done with it, it's a custom kit and a waste of money for the greddy kit since so many parts would not be used.

/\ if you buy it second hand who gives a flying that you have to throw some bits away . None of the stuff you keep wears out anyway .....

second hand, thats a good point. anothe good option is to buy the esmeril(1st or 2nd hand), and either run it for what its worth, or just start out by replacing anything you may feel is junk and work from there. you'll still have a lot of the important stuff, manifold, piping etc. and have the option to put what YOU want in the other places

My goal is between 300-350 rwhp. There are kits that go way beyond that (the Esmeril has recently pushed 414 rwhp) but I'm not interested in that kind of power and the dangers it comes with.

From what I read, 300 rwhp is basically not a possible goal with the GReddy kit, or at least not worth the hassle of trying to squeeze that much power from a small turbo. Write down EXACTLY what you want from your car. Don't look at kits and then figure out what you want. The GReddy kit offers a decent punch without a lot of lag, but not very good top end. If thats not what you want, then don't settle. Again, write down what you're looking for and find your kit based on that information.

Speaking of kits, since Mazsport has gone under what kits are available now? I hear GReddy is going down too...will the MM upgrade be availabe?...

romycha1 02-03-2009 02:32 PM

GReddy isn't going down. The filed bankruptcy, but they aren't going out of business.

i just bought a used GReddy kit off ebay for 2500. Less than 1000 miles. Good deals are out there, you just have to wait for them and jump on them when you see it cause their may not be another. A used GReddy kit probably gives you the best bang for your buck if you plan on upgradeing.

SFR is another nice top-mount turbo kit. I have a custom one on my car.
