20B NA Research Thread!
Hey everyone, I'm doing some research and information gathering on doing a Naturally Aspirated 20B swap into my '04. I am not new to this car or wrenching in general. I am an ASE and Subaru Master Tech, so please no "flaming or noob" comments. My general line of questioning here is as follows:
1.) Has anyone done a normal 20B swap on here and recall how the spark and fuel system wiring was done? 2.) With the exception of a cross member/motor mounts, what needs to be physically modified on the frame/chassis to accommodate the new engine? 3.) Will higher compression RX8 rotors work in this engine to compensate for the loss of the turbos? Any advise would be greatly appreciated and taken into consideration. I haven't found anyone on here who has done this, and the "search tool" has been used extensively. Also if you all could throw in average prices of the components needed that would be a help as well. Thanks! |
Why don't you search again? There are a couple of 20B RX-8 threads already so there is no need for a new one.

adam from thmotorsports is slowly building a n/a 20b for his car. he will probably be done before 9ks turbo build tho. lol |
Ok thanks guys. Like I said, I searched but I must have missed it. I am half retard so its ok...

Just off he top of my head you have Vivid racing, Angeljoelv, thmotorsports, stickmarijuana, m4f1050, rgonza, and one other guy from PR that I know of that have completed or are working on this type of build (with a turbo anyway).

Yeah I looked up 9ks thread and all that after 200.mph told me about it. I found quite a few and honestly I think I have the info I need. There's no way I'm gonna drop $15k, $20k, or even $30k into a car when the motor thats in it can make plenty of power NA. I appreciate the help guys, but this is not the route I wanna go. Maybe a streetport or even bridgeport down the road but as for now I'll just stick to beefing up the suspension and brakes. Thanks again

sub'd for interest
And ... I do mean this, it's not a flame Why would you go thru all that work and not do it with a turbo!?!?!? edit --- OP posted while I was typing this. |

I curious now thinking how much he thought it was going to be?
Are upgrades on Subies that cheap that 15k scared him aware from doing this kind of serious upgrade? What a noob |
Well $10k makes a dominator of a STI, and I'm in the process of buying a house...so $15k is alot of money. I understand you have to pay to play, but that's not in the budget since mine is daily driven at the moment. Its not a dead plan/idea...at least not yet. And as for the "noob" comment...yeah pretty much, but I'm ok with it. Never hurts to ask a question

Don't be, its still just a STI...they are all turbo and most of us here would rather have a Legacy 2.5GT Spec.B. I just want a little more power, better handling, and better brakes for the one or two times I take it to Mid-Ohio and a handful of autocross events.

According to the guy I work next to, $3,500 in an '06 STI net 502whp...and that includes tuning. He told me to share that...

Most high HP STI's = dyno queens.

it never hurts to search first or act like you actually know what you are doing without needing to have your hand held or otherwise imposing on anyone else
"I looked into 20B engines and they seem really expensive. Why are these engines so expensive?" is a question. "What is the capital of Rhode Island?" is not a question. It is just lazy and ignorant. thank you for feeding me just the same . |
