09Factor's Automatic Greddy install and build out.

5 Attachment(s)
The original install date in March of 2007 ,so I have had this write up on the todo list for over a year now. Now was a good time with everyone jumping on Kane's Overlord's of Boost list I might as well. Kane, its your fault for getting me to do this. Thanks buddy!

Current loadout:

Engine Management:
Cobb AP Jeef Tuned maps for 9 psi operation

Forced induction:
Mitsu Td06-18g rebuilt and balanced
Greddy Profec B-Spec II Boost controller
Greddy Type-Rs BOV
Coated IC piping
Vibrant 5 ply silicone couplers.

Intake and Exhaust:
Custom 4" CAI leading up the 3.5 K&N maf housing, screens before and after.
Ported and modified Greddy turbo manifold (some flowbenching done)
Gutted RP Supercat with header wrap.
HKS Hi-Power single exit exhaust

Water/Methanol inj:
Turblown 4 psi Hopp switch in compressor discharge pipe
Windscreen washer bottle as the reservoir
The spray nozzle sprays into the compressor of the turbo.

We did extensive testing on where the best place to place the nozzle based on EGT's.
and this was the location that dropped the EGT's the most. (Some may question the possible water-hammer effect)
This position has been implemented on 9 Rx-7's so far and no signs of any additional wear on the compressor wheel.

Cooling:
BHR Automatic Radiator (makes a big difference in the summer!)
Single OEM oilcooler with a modified bypass plug
30:70 coolant/water mix with Purple Ice additive

Monitoring and logging:
Inovate LM-1 Afr running a Prosport Digital AFR gauge.
Temp gauges for Tranny hot and cold sides
Water temp gauge
Some off-brand boost gauge. Matches the interior and came with the turbo kit.

I bought the Greddy Kit used and it's condition upon arrival was fair.

The Intercooling piping had oil and typical air contaminates all through them. The intercooler looked just as dirty. A 1/2 gallon of oil eater later I was all good to start installing the intercooler and intercooling piping.
Also the prior owner had sent his plugs. They were black, almost to the oil soaked state.

There is only one main difference with the turbo install on an automatic that I found other than tuning. AT fluid cooler hardlines are directly in the path of the Intake charge piping. No big deal, I just unbolted the hard line mount and now I have plenty of space.

Those people I like to call my friends who have my thanks for this project:

Sort-kinda stealth install. Since then I have dropped the intercooler a 1 1/2 in down. So it has more airflow to it.
https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1231799790
Some dirty middle exhaust ports. The OEM manifold bolts we found were close to finger-tight. The center exhaust ports were leaking to atmosphere as shown by the soot here.

We had to air hammer the heat shield and the passenger foot well sheet metal a little. For some reason there wasn't enough room to get to the d-pipe bolts.

It came into being one very wacky early Monday morning. Jeef was tuning and i on the gas, this cloud of blue smoke starts billowing out from under the hood. now this was in boost mind you. Jeff's like "Dude you're afrs are good. it's probably an oil leak. We need to check it."
I had vented the oil breather line to atmosphere. The oil was a little overfilled! Whoops. The car smelled for 2 months like oil.

This one clearly show that I don't know what the foo how to properly tune a boostcontroller.. yes I FAIL! :lol2: The spike at 3k rpm the boost comes on quick but drops off. just need more seat time to play with it.

Brettus 01-11-2009 07:52 PM

how many miles on the greddy now ?

09Factor 01-12-2009 09:49 AM

Total mileage on turbo: 10521. no sign of blue smoke in the exhaust.
EDIT: Pics are finially fixed that they will show to everyone. Seems like Rx8club has issues resolving the addresses of the pics in photobucket and picasa.

04RX8man 01-12-2009 06:50 PM

looks great! I can't wait to find a good kit to buy at a great deal!

09Factor 01-25-2009 01:32 PM

I was asked how the Water meth system is setup. So I did a more detailed breakdown of what it really it comprised of.

The way the meth system works:
Windshield washer bottle holds the H2O/alchy solution
it is plumbed into a spray nozzle that is placed 10" away from the front of the turbo's compressor.

There is a Hobbs switch that is set for 4 psi activation.
One wire from the Hobbs switch is connected to one the windshield washer connector pins. The other pin on the windshield washer connector, is connected to the alternator.

When the hobbs switch "sees" 4 psi it closes the circut and the system sprays what ever in the bottle. Some days its distilled water, other it's water/alcohol, once in a blue moon it's beer:)

For now it works very well, but the windshield washer pump will go back to it normal duties and be replaced by a larger tank and a 150psi meth pump.

Renesis07 02-12-2009 04:54 PM

how many miles were on the car before boost?

09Factor 02-12-2009 09:37 PM

the 8 had 38k on the odo. the motor had 17k and now it has 52k on the odo

chickenwafer 02-13-2009 10:28 PM

Just noticed something 09 . You should drill more holes in your plastic piece in front of the intercooler . If you take the bumper off you can drill the holes the take the last bits in the corners out with a stanley knife ......
It does make a difference to your IATs ;)

I have thought about that for a long time, even before boost.

The main reason I have not added more airflow through the black grill, I have a hard time cutting into exposed OEM pieces. just in case I want to revert to stock or something else.

I have taken it out entirely and didn't like the look. the tabs are yellow back there for some reason. :banghead: I think I'll paint them black and install a black diamond patterned screen..

Thanks man.

It's rumored that he's some manicial scientist that troll's here.

Brettus 02-17-2009 01:21 PM

/\ you dont drill the whole thing because the bumper is behind the upper 1/2 but you can drill out the lower 1/2 and double the amount of air getting through there .....
