This weekend, I decided to damn the consequences, get out the dremel and make my Roady2 fit - I was plenty tired of those vent clips bogarding my precious airconditioning...

Now for the Reader's Digest version of my mod:

I had to remove the rib that seperates the two halves of the module, trim the upper "lip" of the tray, remove the metal liner on the door, and do some other minor sculpting to make it fit. Once the rip, grind, and burn part was over, I sealed some of the larger holes with some extra ABS plastic and quick fix UV curable Bondo (I'm proud to say I've bondo'ed my 8...) Once that was said and done, it was time for some hole drilling for the wires into the compartment, and then I trimmed it out in adhesive backed felt from HobbyLobby. I'll throw up some pics, and if anyone's interested, I'll go ahead and describe what I did in more detail.

The first pic shows the rib and the metal liner removed.

The next pic (kind of a gap here, sorry), shows the rest of the trimming done on the upper lip with the bondo filler (white goop), and the outlet removed (just a torx screw to remove)

The third pic shows what it looked like trimmed out in felt before going to the car

Fourth is installed

Fifth shows the door closed over it


Just as a note - the Roady2 is a 6V unit, so I have the outlet underneath the ashtray module in the car, with the power adapter plugged in and everything wrapped in electrical tape.

IMO, it all looks pretty pimp and just needs the last touches for it to be exactly what I wanted.

Are you using the built in FM modulator or directly connected?

My antenna's on the package tray in the back, held there using high temp double sided foam tape, and the wire is routed along the factory conduit (under the package tray in the trunk, along the side of the rear seat, over to the console, and up to the ashtray.

I'm modulating right now (hopefully one of the AUX inputs will pan out soon), and it doesn't sound too bad (like a good FM broadcast).

All in all, it took me the better part of Saturday to get it all done, and about 3 hours on Friday pulling out the back half of the interior to put the antenna back there.
