using 2 headunits

I have a 2003 Mazda6 with the Bose package and I've asked this question on mazda6club and no one seems to know. I want to install a Pioneer AVIC-N1 in the top map pocket, but still want to be able to use the factory headunit when using the navigation disk in the pioneer unit. Could I just splice the wires to accomplish this or would that overload everything and screw it all up? Someone mentioned a switch of some sort, so what would I put that switch on to use both at the same time? Is this a worthless cause? I have a portable mp3 player I could plug into the rear of the pioneer unit to use why using the navi. Would I be able to use the mp3 player while it's doing the navigation? Thanks in advance.

First off, I'm not an audio expert...

But, anyway, you could buy an AuxMod (they just went into preproduction) or a PIE adapter and run the new deck through the factory one. Then, on the factory head unit you'd switch to Tape (even if you don't have one) and then play your other music. I believe that the Nav system would still take over the front left speaker.

AuxMod (long thread...you may just want to read the first page and the last two or three):

(Good luck!)

I know all about aux mod as I have kept up with it from the beginning. So I could just plug the second unit into that and use it as a cd player most of the time and as a navi? Would both work at the same time though? I want to use the stock one for a cd player on trips and use the navigation to "navigate" while driving and listening to music.

Oh, I think I misunderstood a little bit. I thought you were adding a new stereo and using the car's factory navigation system, but I think I got that backwards. The Pioneer is only for Nav, right, and you want to use the factory stereo? In the car's stock Nav system, it takes over the left front speaker when issuing a voice command. I guess you'll have to find out how the Pioneer AVIC-N1 works. Maybe it has an audio in and out. You could then route one of the stereo's speaker wires through that.

As far as a switch, I'm sure something like that exists (that would cut off one input when the other is present) but I'm no expert and wouldn't know where to look.
