tv tuner question

so i was thinking of doing a tv tuner in my car for show, anyone know how it works? i was referred to this one

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...n+TT-500.html#

but like how would that work for cable or regular tv or direct tv? do you call them up and say hey i want service for my car? lol, how does that work? anyone know?

also be nice to be able to watch football in my car while im at work or out and about and not near a tv =) lol

I have a tv tuner in my car. Basically it will play whatever through a cable input. When your mobile, you will only be able to watch whatever reception you can get from an antenna. However, due to this new digital tv switch, i dont think that you can still get tv through an antenna. So at this point, i would just save my money and forget the tv tuner.

i thought you only install TV tuner/satellite TV dish if you have an RV and drive it to NASCAR races and park it in the infield and watch the race on TV while actually AT the race...

Yes wait until they release a new unit for the digital TV switch.

J_Owens 09-12-2008 03:08 AM

Ok will do, thanks for the info guys, anyone know when they may release one for the digital switch? Or how I can find out? Maybe not till the switch actually happens? If so then maybe ill have it set up by next football season.

i don't know about automotive applications but i'm pretty sure there are already OTA digital tuners for stationary tv's.

New TV's were required to have digital tuners about 2 yrs ago. The switch over to digital will begin early next year. Major cities will be the first that will be required to switch over. Total switchover will take a couple of years.
Just keep things straight, digital doesn't mean HD. The broadcasters have a frequency allocation that allows them to broadcast a combination of SD & HD signals.

I'm sure car audio manufacturers will announce it on or before CES in January.

There are still CRT style TV's made today without a digital tuner. 27" and lower. However, they are all clearly marked of this from the manufacturer.

Why cant we use a power inverter like for ps3/360 in car entertainment ?
go online and get the coupon for 40.00 for the digital converter box (then it'll be 19.99) then plug that into a power inverter(300 watt peak or more) you can
buy an adapter for the car tv antenna, coax - 1/8in jack (most diversity antennas
are 1/8th post jack) the audio out to headunit, video to monitor or headunit if your
one of the lucky ones that have a screen in the dash already(youknow) then hide
the digital converter box in trunk or under seat , its not very big .now you will
get all the digital channels you would have on an analog tv at home ,I think ?
sounds like it would work to me... Ive put playstations/xboxes in cars before so
it should be kinda the same.

tOm

firebirdude 09-14-2008 05:28 PM

It does work. Have a friend with all that in his camaro.

J_Owens 09-14-2008 06:39 PM

That sounds complicated to me lol

rollerbldes 09-14-2008 06:46 PM

Power inverters are clunky and inefficient. I think it's probably better to wait for a proper box to come out.

So are subwoofers, but we still use them.

If you have direct tv you can get service for your car. It does require having a "flattened" satellite mounted on your roof though. It is not the normal satellite dish your use to seeing, but one garnered from military technology. As long as your not driving downtown with lots of high buildings reception is fairly good.

Yeah.... cause I really want that dinner plate atop my 8.....lol

rollerbldes 09-16-2008 10:00 PM

lol Sirius has backseat TV but it only has Nickelodeon, Disney, and CN. eheheh

Girl: So what channels do you get on these bad boys?
You: uh...

REtali8 09-17-2008 12:26 AM

Never said I'd like that dinner plate on top either, but since OP was looking for options.. that IS an option. Now if it could be embeded in the roof so the top was flush and nearly seamless.......... :FIREdevil

rollerbldes 09-17-2008 01:19 AM

...You would burn in hell?

J_Owens 09-17-2008 02:07 AM

lol, yeah hes got a point, i was looking for options and that was an option, what does this "dinner plate look like? would be nice if you could mount it seamless, can you place it else where on or in the car? ie: inside the trunk? mainly just want to be able to watch football at work or where ever i am, probably wont need it mainly while driving just parked so if it would work parked and in the trunk or something, wouldnt bother me

firebirdude 09-17-2008 07:48 AM

http://www.kvh.com/products/images/a7_color_domes.jpg
And it's going to be line of sight. So in the trunk is a no-no. You could always keep it in the trunk and when you are stopped, take it out of the trunk and set it on the trunk lid. lol

J_Owens 09-17-2008 02:04 PM

not a bad idea just put it on trunk when im parked, sounds like a plan, thats for the help guys
